    Returning OBE

Alan Cumming has handed back his OBE. Not the first to hand back such awards over protests of some form of course but I think he has a point regarding the present day "toxicity" of the word Empire and it's connotations. Surely such awards could be renamed by now?

My youngest is currently studying the British Empire at A level and it is obvious that there are a lot of controversies around this subject at the moment. Just hacks me off with all the over-woke stuff that can be directed at it and the selectiveness of this approach. There may indeed be a danger of more right wing defences using its forum but sites like History Reclaimed are valuable in addressing this bias and offering a more balanced view. Those who argue that the industrial revolution and the British Empire were based purely on the wealth generated from the Slave Trade are missing a lot of more complex issues and they also conveniently forget that once Britain abolished slavery it spent quite a lot of money and effort in trying to eradicate it across its colonies and particularly in Africa. This cannot , of course, excuse the country of its long involvement in the trade itself, but surely it is also important to acknowledge and not ignore?

Was/is the concept of empire and colonialism wrong? Absolutely. Were there any advantages gained by those countries colonized? Limited but, whilst not politically correct, yes. Maybe Monty Python had it right all those years ago in Life of Brian when the Liberation Front debated "what have the Romans ever done for us?"😁

Exactly Dubs. History should be used to learn from and move forward. Nothing wrong in acknowledging the mistakes and (in the case of slavery) appalling actions of the country in the past -and I think it important to do so -but no point getting mired down in talk of guilt and reparations all the time for things that happened generations ago. Just work to get things right now and for the future!

My son studies history and we were talking the other day about the likelihood of a general strike, he rightly said that happened in the past and surely those in power have learnt how to avoid it this time, if only we did learn from history…

When we had an empire most of our population lived in poverty, kids aged seven where being shoved up chimneys and down coal mines. Then as now it was only the upper crust that benefited from wealth, it was never shared down. Only s hit comes down from the top.
What annoys me is that we are made to feel guilty about slavery as though we had patented it, when it's as old as civilisation itself.
Just a generation ago Germany almost created the most evil empire ever. Men women children and babies who were living in their own countries were rounded up, gassed and burnt, or worked to death for the good of the third Reich. Children were used in scientific experiments, and human head's and skin was used as ornaments and lampshades.

Good job we didn't do stuff like that eh?☠️🙄

The whole British Empire awards need change in general. We still don't have an explanation as to why Gavin Williamson has been knighted.

I'd like to see a system only where truly great people who make incredible change are recognised with a knighthood. No more than 30 in a generation.

You can kick a football well and get a knighthood these days. You're not a great for winning a tournament, no matter how much joy it brings a nation. If you can be great at football and then use money and status to make positive change, then they deserve a knighthood...not many of them around though.
