Today my wife suggested we return to Iceland to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary.
I’d rather play conkers with my own b o l l o c k s than visit that place again, terrible hotels and awful food and the most miserable weather in Europe.
I’ve suggested to her that we do Sweden this year instead.
Obviously Thomas will be the expert on this but I’d enjoy anyone’s advice.
I quite fancy being there in summer and taking in a city stay as well as something more remote and coastal.
Any advice appreciated.?
Indeed I have advice. And, advice depend on how long you’re planning to stay, it is a huge country compared to England.
But, the capital Stockholm is a must, and its archipelago.
The west coast with Smögen and Göteborg (Gothenburg) and further down south is recommended, as also the most southern coast in Skåne (Scania).
Going north (Norrland) also recommended but then you need time (I have only been there once).
We went to Sweden and Norway in 2019 with Great Rail Journeys, an exceptional holiday. Started off in Stockholm before going North, mostly on the Inlandsbanan, a single track railway that runs right up the centre of the country. We went as far North as a town called Jokkmokk, north of the Arctic Circle. Most of the holiday, though, was in Norway, a beautiful country. There was a great deal more of Sweden to see than we managed but I can guarantee that you would see a great many trees! Very expensive, though.
I’d probably say the west or south coast, different coast line to Cornwall though. Places like Lysekil, Smögen, Göteborg in the west and the area Österlen in the far south (Kivik, Simrishamn, Ystad - ”Wallander area”, crime stories by Henning Mankell).
There is a nice canal trip available not far south from Stockholm - ”Göta kanal”, starting in Söderköping.
Don’t miss the archipelago just outside of Stockholm - lots of boat trips available.
