Ward, Bird and Wilson injured - out 6 -8 weeks

I do ahve some sympathy for Warne, as he works to get Derby fit and firing, he loses 3 players 2 of the key players for between 6-8 weeks and loses all cover at RB!

One silver lining is that is most likely keeps Bird at the club for a season but I do feel for the guy as he tries to turn things around.

He's got Smith and Rooney, that suggests cover to me. I'd say Nelson too but he looked uneasy at it yesterday. I do agree though he's been dealt a **** hand injury wise this week

What worries me more, and I guess rA too, is that there are too many ex Rotherham players popping up as potential signings

It’s a blow and I sympathise, although I think Wilson has a bit of a reputation for being injury prone. Smith and Rooney seem pretty good cover to me too, thought Rooney was excellent yesterday.
I’d heard at least eight weeks for Wilson and Ward and 8-10 weeks for Bird who’s ankle and lower leg was in a cast yesterday. Given that he’s out of contract at the end of the season (I think) I imagine he might be back by Bonfire night and sold in January.

The Rotherham thing is a concern. Reminds me of Clough Jnr who seemed to think the football world was bordered by Sheffield in the north and Burton in the south.

there's a photo doing the rounds of Ward sitting on a swing with his kids with a removable cast on, so pretty serious

The slight silver lining (lets call it pewter) to injuries obtained and incomings not so is that two players are being blooded earlier than Ward would want, and IMO good for that.

Disappointing news to lose 3 players for such a long time, positives are Sibley is back and Barkhuizen shouldnt be long.

Rooney is more CB than RB and certainly not a WB, neither is nelson, but that may force Warne to change formation.

Last time I looked rA Warne had brought in 2 players previously at Rotherham, 1 from P/Boro, 1 from Bristol City, 1 from Luton, 1 from Cov,
1 from Blackpool and 1 from Hull City, which hardly supports your assertion that his scouting is limited in area does it?

Also if a coach knows players and has previously scouted/worked with them, it sometimes makes sense to bring in a player of a known quantity but absolutely no evidence that Warne is only looking in that area.

If you referring to the rumours about £1.5 miilion on a player from Rotherham, he has answered that quite succinctly by saying and I paraphrase - "Well done me for signing him, (at Rotherham) but I don't have £1.5 million so that won't be happening"

Much better at the back against Fleetwood. Bradley dropped, it could just as easily Nelson or both that got the chop. As it was, Nelson got the nod and the back 3 of Roons, Nelson and Cash delivered the goods. Not perfect but a great improvement on previous games. Wash and Waggy up top looks like a pairing that will score, more so than with Collo there which is not good news for Collo when it comes to starting games. Thommo put a bomb under midfield and his enthusiasm and drive looked infectious. He does overdo things occasionally but he'll learn that as he gets more experience.

A new striker might see Collo slip to #4 in the pecking order. Definitely need 1 or 2 wing backs when you consider we're missing Ward and Wilson for 2 months plus NML's defensive frailties.

You were referring to ‘cover’. Warne has three at RB so that seems sufficient to me.

No new recruits from South of Luton or North of Blackpool suggests his/his head of recruitment’s contract doesn’t include a mileage allowance. The overall feeling I have is of lack of imagination although I accept that LR last year May have ‘struck lucky’ whilst employing a broadly similar approach

One thing I thought about, and it relates to a comment Wildsmith made when asked why he chose Derby - ‘why wouldn’t you - fantastic stadium, big crowds…’. That sort of answers things the other way - for lower league players on maybe £2k a week and a career full stop in mid 30s , you ‘wouldn’t’ if a club with a tin pot stadium and 5000 supporters was offering you £3000, i I would suggest. And of course, in all cases, we’ll never know.

One thing it was lovely to see was a striker (Waggy) able to collect the ball with his back to goal and either control and move or find a good pass. Like Martin from the recent past or the Master of it, O’Hare. Not as flashy as McGoldrick but I think he’ll prove a real asset. None of our other strikers have that skill

You seem unable to let things go at the moment. Don’t know why. So, yes...Rooney is more of a CB than a RB but, as he proved again on Saturday, he’s good RB ‘cover’ which is all that was ever claimed.

The ‘Rotherham connection’ isn’t just about who we’ve signed but who we’ve been linked with...eg, Michael Ihiekwe, Cameron Humphreys, Freddie Ladapo and Michael Smith. They all share a Rotherham connection and it was you who actually brought the forum rumours of the last two.

We’ll see. Might all have just been more ‘paper talk’. All that was suggested, not initially by me, is that it’d be nice to see our new chief scout spread the net a tad wider. Not worth fighting about really is it?
