No reports of this on the BBC, surprise, surprise! I wonder if any objectors will be charged with a hate crime? The Metropolitan Police have sanctioned this, worrying.

Oh yes, the Partition of 1947 that led to the creation of modern day India and Pakistan out of the old India of Empire. 15 million displaced and at least a million died. That went well didn't it ? Wonder if the celebrations will recall that?

Of course you can try and lay much of the blame at the feet of British colonialism but the divisions between Hindus and Muslims especially (admittedly exploited by the British through the "divide and rule" policy) were at the root of the problem as Hindu and (smaller) Sikh populations generally fought to get South into the new India and Muslim communities sought to get North into Pakistan. Both sides played their part in this dreadful and massive loss of life.

Some journalists and British soldiers who had witnessed the results of the Nazi Holocaust in Europe are on record as saying that some of the atrocities and brutality they saw during this period of Partition were worse still. Looting, torching of villages, mob violence, mass rapes and mutilation, babies cut from the womb and babies roasted on spits. Mostly driven by the hatred of religious differences.

Let's hope that any celebrations over the birth of either Pakistan or modern day India are also tempered with a Remembrance for all those who suffered or died so violently at this time.
