    Burnley v Cardiff

I wasn't there, just got back home from France about an hour before kick off so followed it on the BBC. The first half stats weren't impressive with a gifted own goal and Cardiff having more chances and possession. So what was it really like?

    Likewise k-c, I couldn’t watch the match.

It seems that Cardy does not play the possession game - 72% of going nowhere and achieving nothing.

The style seems to be more based on powerful “transitions” as the so - call experts call it.

However we are doing it we are creating chances and actually putting them away. Terrific!

ps. English FL highlights on ITV 4 at 9 pm, not quite MOTD but always worth a watch when we've won, and barstewards throwing away a winning position.

Cardiff did not get a kick in the second half k_c and until Amdouni came on we witnessed a 30 minute training session until Zeki unleashed a thunderbolt that almost broke the net. Our current squad depth is frightening.

But what if a better team had taken the advantage in the first half, given the possession we gave Cardiff? Or would it have not happened given our improved defence.

You sound like my wife BT, she is not open to reasonable speculation either.

    Chris

They were a decent side initially and the midfield was being overrun but we kept going and being honest they didn’t offer much threat for controlling the middle of the park.

I’d say swapping a young Odebert for Rodriguez isn’t the answer tbh

Having said all that when they fluffed the goal and gave us 1 start we looked a little shaky until we beat a full back wide and Rodriguez squared sensibly and after a deflection Koleosho buried a second.

Second half was different game completely we bossed it and picked them off at will with verybwe worked goals.

Amdouni needs to stay and play in the hole behind foster imo - very intelligent footballer who can do what he did today easily at this level.

Initially we tried to play Brownhill in the 10 roll but it didn’t work for a while until he made the perfect run and finished again.

It’s hard to complain as in the words of a gladiator are you not entertained

Truthfully we were and that’s all that matters.

I watched the spill over form last season though trying to play around our own box and last third and couldn’t help but wander if we’d played like that against premiership opposition we’d have been just the same as last year 2-3-4 down.

This is a different league / animal completely whilst competitive I admit it’s a mile away from the premiership and today in the premiership would have been a heavy loss.

strangely watching Ipswich a little at dinner time they reminded me a lot of Burnley - willing and trying but chances missed and in the end just not good enough
As Liverpool for their hap hazard start still had too much quality.

Thanks army, that precis was just what I was asking for, it's put things in perspective for a non attendee like me. The Barstewards game was booked up when I tried but hopefully i'll soon make a game.

It is comforting to know it isn’t just Burnley keepers who allow back-passes to roll under their boots and into the net. It is comforting to know the team are able to let their opponents have more possession if we can counter with deadly effect. We only had (according to the BBC match stats) 9 shots of which 4 were on target in the entire match. Clearly defensive solidity when we do come under pressure is a key to our play. Selling Trafford would not be a disaster for us if we get a sizeable fee. Selling O’Shea would be a disaster imho but if a mega bid goes in for him we appear to have secured very useful cover with the signing of Humphreys from Chelsea. Amdouni’s goal was a cracker and I think he is the natural replacement for Odobert. The Cardigan One will doubtless pick what he thinks is his best starting XI and he has hardly put a foot wrong so far in selection and tactics. Sunderland away will surely prove a tougher test than Luton or Cardiff. Who would have thought we would already have racked up 9 goals after two league games with 7 different Clarets on the score sheet? Who would have thought Preston would already be looking for their THIRD manager of the season? The problems are deep at Deepdale.
