You can't play at centre half at 16, not big and strong enough.

Stomes played at full-back I think when he started out at Barnsley.

He is 6’ 3’ at 16 years old and will not get any smaller!!!
Conditioning work will help him ‘bulk up’ as necessary.
Central defenders are not built like Micky Droy (for the older ones!!) anymore - Stones being the perfect example.

I watched England under 18 team the other day! They were absolutely enormous for their age I thought.

Gains, totally agree. How many clubs blooded their young players at a young age? Rooney Everton, Owen Liverpool, Sheff Utd with two 16 year olds on their bench last night and one played last Saturday.

Ok, Rooney and Owen were forwards and some may think at 16 our lad may be too lightweight to stave off heavier bigger pros but who knows unless you try him out. What do we do, wrap him in cotton wool for two seasons just so he’s 18 and he might have bulked out by then. At 18 he’s still growing.

How about a cameo last 15-20 minutes, if were comfortable in a game, to give him a taste of what's to come in his career?

de Ligt was captain at Ajax at 17, if this lad is that good he should be given a chance in the EFL Trophy, pity he isn't a midfielder

We have Oliver Wilkinson at Oakwell , he captained England under 16"s the other week and has already made a first team appearance this season despite being only 15 years old and he did not look out of place , he is a unit for his age and obviously will keep on growing for a long time to come, so if they are good enough and can physically handle it then why not use them and bring them on under careful management .

It's not really "bulking up", boys normally stop growing at 16 but muscle development goes on until 18.

I’m no medical expert but understood that make adults can still be ‘growing’ into early 20’s??

Anyway, there are plenty of examples of ‘kids’ playing at the top levels.
Just look at Jude Bellingham who played in the championship at 16 and Bundesliga at 17??
He also played for the full England team at 17!
