    O/T RIP Geoff Capes

One of Britain's biggest sporting personalities of the 1970s/80s in more than one sense of the word. Still holds the UK shot putt record set 44 years ago. Died today aged 75.

    RIP big man!

CAM, didn't know that. I always remember watching him thinking what a giant of a guy.

Wasn't he a copper from Peterborough or am I confusing myself? Either way, RIP BIG man.

Yes, somewhere in those parts, Cambridgeshire/Lincolnshire. Also a budgie 'fancier'.

Cheers pal, I knew you'd find something.

6' 5.5'' tall and weighing 26.77 stones......''Yes officer, I'm coming quietly''. I bet when some villains saw him they must have thought twice about their next actions

Also World's Strongest Man (twice I think). Didn't realise until today that he still holds the British shotput record after 45 years. Given the advances in training, nutrition and pharmacology since then, that's quite an achievement. And 75 isn't a terrible innings, all things considered. RIP.

Sad to hear this. He was a genuinely very decent bloke by all accounts and, as is so often the case with men of his stature and strength, a very gentle person.

He did his police training at the old Training Centre in the village of Nutfield in Surrey near where I lived in my ****age years. For a while he was going out with a girl from Redhill who I'd been out with at school a little earlier and she spoke extremely fondly of him.
