    Ray O'Brien

    Don't worry, he's not dead!

Arguably, our best ever left back and I just found this bit of trivia whilst Googling around.

'At Meadow Lane he created a club record in 1979/80 when he became the first full back to finish as leading scorer'.

I wasn't aware of this record, was anyone else?

Edit; Following on from another thread, I see that this site has translated a dash between the dates as a question mark.

A free kick on the edge of the box equalled A Ray O' goal !! it was almost as certain as a penalty ! RAY O' used to ring out around the lane when a kick was given on the edge of the box !!

Speaking of the Ray O era, have I got it right that "Killer" was only sent off once whilst at Notts? (the one red card I've got Kilcline listed for was v Everton, got booked for a foul with 4 mins left and the ref then sent him off for arguing with him about it).

Yeah that rings a bell. My favourite Killer moment was the winning header at home to Arsenal, celebrated that goal like it had won us the world cup.

As for ?Ray O? every free kick just outside the box was as good as a penalty!

Scored a first-half brace at the Kop end in a pummelling of Hull.
Jeff Wealands in goal for the visitors - never could get the hang of that defensive wall thingy.

I remember those two pretty identical free-kicks, my mind has them in the Lane End but I might well have that wrong, especially as it was around Christmas so I might have gone with my family who were Koppites. The thing that is clear is Ray was superior to anyone else I have seen at left-back, including Nigel Worthington, who Sergeant Wilko replaced him with, more pace, less class. Ray O is in the all-time Notts XI.
