Am I correct in my assumption that public money used for the redevelopment of the area around Old Trafford, will include the stadium itself? Does this mean that Manchester United will gain a new or refurbished stadium paid for by you and I? If so, will she be doing the same at the Hawthorns and the surrounding area?
I may be completely wrong in my interpretation of this statement. If so, perhaps someone could explain to me exactly what she meant.
I have only read the proposal through once but my understanding of it would involve public money being used to clear away/move some industrial premises, as the land on which they stand is required for the new or refurbished stadium. It sounds, on the face of it, outrageous, as Manchester United are one of, if not the, most wealthy clubs in the World. They should pay for their own stadium and all the work that is required to facilitate the building thereof.
So basically, kettering and soulman agree with my interpretation of it! Thank you Rachel Reeves for spending our money on one of the richest clubs in the world. Also, a third runway at Heathrow is going to do the environment the world of good. So much for Labour’s plans to reduce carbon emissions etc. They talk a good game but that is as far as it goes.
We should put in a grant to move Halfords over a bit
My (admittedly limited) understanding of it is that Government money will only go to regeneration areas outside of the stadium and the stadium itself will have to be funded by Manchester United.
But it is important for the club to have the Chancellor onside though because it makes it easier for them to finance the project with Government support. Because the Govt have promised X amount for the regeneration - it will make it more risk averse for investors. Things like local planning permission etc. the process should in theory be much smoother now.
