    Handball

Anyone else fed up with the way they enforce the handball rule these days? It used to be that handball had to be ?intentional? but now the rule seems to be ?your arms have to be in a natural position? to avoid a handball call. So now we are ending up with defenders jumping around the penalty box with their arms so firmly by their sides it?s like watching Riverdance. And if someone blasts the ball into your face from 2 yards away and it then it happens to hit your arm because you don?t want to look like a complete spare while you are jumping to block a shot then that?s hand ball. The natural position for your arms when you are jumping is for them to be flailing a bit, I don?t know how you can jump properly at all without your arms reacting to the inertia in some way.

The ref pretty well had to give the penalty today given the handball rule these days but it?s a very poor rule when it?s administered in such a ridiculous way. And I would feel the same if Plymouth had given up a similar penalty in our favour.

I think it should be for very clear, deliberate attempts to stop a goal with the hand.

You can't run with your hands at your side, so the idea that giving a penalty when a player shoots with force and it accidentally hits a blokes hand who is a few yards away is daft for me.

I posted the same comment on a different thread. Regarding today, if I am correct, if the ball hits the body first and then the hand, it is not handball. It may have hit Styles on the left arm first but it was flat to his body so it was not a penalty and therefore when it hit his right arm, a penalty should not have been given as it was deflected.

I think of Ally Robertson vs Man United in 1976. Now THAT was handball!!

There is a game starting at 16.45 at the Aviva Stadium where there will be lots of hand balls. Looking forward to it. Hoping for a better result than what was stumped up by the Baggies lunch time kick off.

Plymouth, bottom of the league. I do despair sometimes.

    Another Guinness please.

Should not have been a penalty, however, we didn’t play well but should have won.

Can?t disagree Calgary buddy. As you say in your last paragraph, the ref had no choice, particularly as his arm was raised high.

As an aside, I am watching England vs Ireland in the Six Nations as I writing. So refreshing to see and hear the ref explaining his decision. Apparently this match is the first time that the ref?s commentary is broadcasted over the PA system to the crowd who are in attendance.

We could learn a lot from rugby - respect for the ref, hearing what the ref is saying to the players, jumping on each other shoulders to get a header (just kidding about the last one).
Another thing I wished we would introduce is having a set finish time but then allow the play to continue until the ball goes out.
I actually think we should have an announcement with, say 20 minutes to go that there will be, say 5 minutes of added time and then switch to a stop watch for the last now 25 minutes. Then every time the play is stopped the clock stops. It would get rid of most of the nauseating time wasting nonsense that goes on. When time is up the ball will have to be put out of play in the opponents half for the game to end. So if you are attacking when time is up, and the other team gives away a corner, you can take the corner and keep taking corners until you eventually kick it over the bar then the game is over. If you are defending then you have to run across the half way line before you can boot it out and end the game. It?s sort of a modified rugby ending. Just a wild thought that will never be adopted!
