Sheffield United - v - Leeds United ***Matchday Thread***

    Sheffield Utd v Leeds Utd
    Monday 24th February@20:00 | Bramall Lane

All eyes in the Championship will be firmly fixed on Bramall Lane this Monday night as Leeds travel to face Sheffield United in a clash brimming with promotion implications, pride and of course bragging rights! The pre-match build-up is dominated by a significant absentee in the Leeds dugout of gaffer Daniel Farke, who will be serving a touchline ban.

Farke?s suspension stems from his celebrations following Leeds' late winner against Sunderland last Monday. Referee Stuart Atwell deemed the on-pitch jubilation excessive, brandishing a yellow card (his third of the season), triggering an automatic one-match ban. This means assistant manager Eddie Riem will take the reins from the touchline as Leeds look to navigate this crucial fixture without their usual leader present.

Despite the managerial setback, Leeds travel to the red side of Sheffield brimming with confidence. Their impressive 15-game unbeaten league run has firmly cemented their status as promotion contenders. However, they face a Sheffield United side equally buoyant. The Blades, under the guidance of Chris Wilder, have rediscovered their bite, winning four of their last five league matches.

A late Anel Ahmedhod?ić goal against Luton Town propelled them briefly to the Championship summit, showcasing their renewed promotion credentials. Wilder boasts an impressive record of seven league wins in nine matches this calendar year, and the return of key players like Hamer and Cannon after missing the Luton game will further bolster their ranks. Kieffer Moore, however, remains unavailable for selection.

Meanwhile, Leeds are expected to field a near full-strength squad, with Patrick Bamford remaining the only notable absentee. Leeds? attacking prowess is undeniable, with goals flowing freely throughout the team. Joel Piroe leads the scoring charts with 14 goals and six assists, but the threat is multifaceted. Brenden Aaronson (8 goals), Daniel James (10 goals and six assists), and Manor Solomon (7 goals and 7 assists) all contribute significantly to Leeds' potent attack.

I think Struijk will start. Ampadu will play in midfield, so who will sit? I think Rothwell will sit. Ampadu will partner Tanaka in midfield. That's my guess.

Its a Yorkshire rivalry thing, Cherry.

Leeds have always been the club (bar Sheffield inter-city rivalries) others in Yorkshire most want to bring down.

As Blades boss Wilder said -
'I think people who know and understand their football will recognise Leeds United are a top-six club in English football. They are an Aston Villa, they are up there for me because of the history, their support, what they have achieved and the players that have played for them.
We are not a top-six club in English football but we would like to be a top-20 club and take it as high as possible, so there is a bit of grudging respect for what they have achieved. 😂
I think we have always felt we are in their shadow a little bit and football-wise with what they have achieved as a football club. We are not a top-six club in English football.
But we would like to be a top-20 club and take it as high as possible. There is a bit of grudging respect for what they have achieved'.

Key differences from my experiences of living in Yorkshire a while back were Leeds is significantly larger than Sheffield with a considerably higher population & Leeds defo had a more prominent nightlife scene with a wider range of bars & clubs & superior music scene over the years too.
Shopping facilities in Leeds far better also, as Leeds generally has more extensive shopping options, including far more larger shopping malls.

But of course I am not biased. 😇
