He was given it when he was born. All children of the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were given the surname (not a middle name) Mountbatten-Windsor as the Duke was unhappy that his children otherwise wouldn't carry his name.

I think Spuddy is referring to the allegations about his ***ual preferences. Tom Driberg famously nicknamed him ?Mountbottom? and he was alleged to prefer them at the younger end of the spectrum?
