Well, won't be many -if any-who mourn him.

Cases like this just make me toy with the idea of supporting a return of Capital Punishment. As a union rep. I'm fully aware that all cases -even if their headlines appear similar to others -are individually different with their own mitigating circumstances and have to be treated as such but if the case is 100% water-tight and the guilt is proven well beyond "all reasonable doubt" and there is no chance of rehabilitation, why spend millions on keeping someone incarcerated for life if they have committed heinous crimes and are deemed an on going threat to others? People can debate the morals of it but it makes no fiscal sense whatsoever when that money could be diverted elsewhere to more worthy use.

I assume that the money paid to keep inmates like Huntley and others in prison for life comes out of the overall budget for prisons but it could surely be better used within that budget. Many prisoners guilty of less serious crimes, for example, re-offend when they come out simply because there is so very little support available to them to help them with their rehabilitation and help them integrate back into society and get somewhere to live and jobs to support themselves. They then impose further costs on an already heavily creaking-if not broken-prison system as they get stuck in a repetitive cycle. Diverting money from keeping lifers guilty of heinous crimes behind bars to fund better resources on this might ultimately be a better option, both helping more people and saving money. I'm not saying that such money would be enough to cover all the costs of the support needed, but it would surely help.

As for Huntley, it also wouldn't surprise me if prison officers were not rather slack at times in their protection of such prisoners from attacks by other inmates.
