Aye, that makes a lot of sense. And I certainly don't expect the Saudis to ditch us even if progress seems to have slowed a lot at the moment.
However, I do think we are at something of a crossroads. Yes, we've had a congested season so far, and quite a few injuries to key players, not least Bruno.
But we have still underperformed. Too often the players have looked as though they've switched off. Too often we have seemed to lack any tactical nous, looking bewildered as to how to break sides down when they defend deep. Yes, Eddie hasn't had the training time he would like. But if we want CL and cup runs, then he never will, at least in the early part of the season. Plus he has made some strange decisions . Not least trying to turn Woltemade into a midfielder.
I'll be absolutely astonished if we suddenly perk up after the international break and manage to get into the CL again. I'll be very surprised if we make Europa. I don't want the Conference League - to me it seems like extra financial restrictions without generating meaningful income.
I hope I'm wrong and we do start playing brilliantly. It just feels as though there's a malaise that's too deep seated to shake off quickly. That too many players have lost belief in meaningful Europe next season, and that many will want to jump ship. That Eddie has lost his momentum with this group of players, and that we'll need a period of rebuilding and consolidation. Hopkinson's bull**** about challenging the world's best teams in 2030 seems even more daft now than when he first said it.
I still think Eddie can be the man to turn this around. That he has the nous to identify and rectify the problems that have led to a pretty disastrous season. Given decent recruitment early in the summer, and a proper pre-season with a re*****ised team, then I think we could be well back on track next season. But this one is a dead duck for me.
