The sensational Josimar to United transfer that never happened

Always remember that day opening The Courier and on the sport page the headline was 'Exclusive: United set to sign Brazilian superstar Josimar' It was Unbelievable. Josmiar had been one of the standouts at 86 World Cup. United offered ?400k which at that time was huge. It was reported as near completion

Stumbled across recently an article in The Courier that did a follow up feature on this a couple of years back.

    https://www.thecourier.co.uk/fp/past...e-united-1988/

A nice background summary which missed one key detail. It was The Courier revealing that United were set to sign Josimar that helped blow up the deal. It alerted other clubs and he ended up at Sevilla. Jim Mclean was absolutely furious with The Courier and if I recall correctly banned the paper from Tannadice.

Anyone else with memories from this?

No real memories to speak of but the courier is also banned from my house, shame you can't wipe your arse on the online version tbh.

    Ceefax f*cking hell 😂
I remember back in the day I'd sometimes have to wait for the Sunday post to come out to get the score down here if I missed the results program on telly. Tuning in to radio Scotland on my sisters radiogram in the hope of some commentary 🤣
I was in Corfu when we lost the cup final to Motherwell and didn't know until the next day when I got hold of a newspaper 🤣

Some things are better now I guess😋

The josimar story broke the weekend we played Arbroath in the Scottish cup at gayfield and won 7-0. Think the feeling was utd had been used a bit to engineer a decent move for him.

Ceefax and Teletext, nothing worse than checking scores on an obscure utd match midweek, thinking you'd got to full time with a draw, and then it flashing up full time 1-0 with a goal that had been scored 11 minutes earlier.

We were 137 pounds for a week in Lloret de mar in 87 for our game v Barca,it was 50 pounds for our bus to Germany for the semi final v BMG.The one day flight to Gothenburg for the final was dearer than the quarter and semi final trips combined though and i needed a bank loan fae Stevie Murray who was by then the manager of the TSB on the Strathie RD.
