In the P&J today - an often discussed subject on here!!
North-east the chipper heartland
The Press and Journal (Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire)20 Aug 2022LESLEY-ANNE KELLY
We asked the people of Scotland the burning question – do you call a chip shop a chippie or a chipper?
More than 2,000 readers provided their views on the subject and responses were received from all 32 Scottish local authorities.
And it’s official – in the Highlands, islands and Moray it’s a chippie!
The rest of Scotland was in agreement, with only fast food fans in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire opting for chipper.
Overall, 57.6% of people voted for chippie/chippy, with 39.5% opting for chipper. The rest call it something else – probably a chip shop.
And then there’s the other big question we were trying to answer – do Scottish people actually eat deep fried Mars bars or is it a tourist-focused gimmick?
The results were closer than you might expect – 1,749 people responded to this question and 44.3% had tried the delicacy.
What this doesn’t tell us is whether they would go back for seconds.
As you can see from our graphics here, in terms of the nation’s favourite chip shop order, the classic fish and chips came out on top.
Some of the more unusual orders were the three people who answered with “pattie and chips” with one saying “it’s an Orkney thing”.
When it comes to favourite chip toppings, vinegar was the clear winner, closely followed by ketchup and salt. And as for the chip shop which was voted the best by those taking part in our survey, The Bay in Stonehaven come out on top, followed by the Silvery Tay in Dundee.
The world-famous celeb hangout – the Anstruther Fish Bar – came in third.
You can analyse all the survey results in full on The Press and Journal website.

I’m glad that ‘Moray’ gets it wrong, because I am from Banffshire, brutally ript from the map in 1974, and it’s definitely a chipper.
**** off you Elginshire ****s.
Violet’s, Sandy Ferries’s, Gartly’s, The Corner Café, and Bennett’s. Jimmy Logie’s in later decades
All legends.
All chippers.
In endless time.
In endless lard.

Cripes, mopping up cold cases at a fast rate here as also a possible breakthrough on the Nairn doorstep murder. Yon p!ssheid that took an affection for alfresco drinkin far too much is the likely suspect. Going to miss the OT payments on this one tbh.Originally posted by Mason89 View PostThat’s somebody been found guilty of the Renee McCrae murder.
Well done to all involved for getting a conviction there. Some effort
