I've just looked at the list of candidates for Rochdale - there are 3 candidates that have been disowned by labour - including the candidate standing for labour!! Then there are a handful standing on local issues, a just stop oil protesting vicar with Parkinson's, a candidate deliberately targeting getting no votes and a few others. Assuming the Tory won't get much support, one of that rag tag collection will get elected. Even against that lot I don't see the Libdem getting any votes. What a ****ing mess British politics is ☹️

Tbf it’s been taken that way by a combination of circumstances and the return of our most right wing contributor outside of Barnsley.

A thread like this is always going to be topical and in an attempt to detract from some more important issues and appeal to the populist mentality amongst a minority of the electorate I expect the right whingers to make as much political capital out of fears regarding Muslims and immigration as they can. Smoke and mirrors.

Probably be a record low turnout. Tory candidate Is a well respected person locally and might be the best candidate but being a Tory and all he wont get in.

Perhaps you’ve been away too long, but in your absence, another contender for most right wing poster has emerged. He’s not as prolific as you but perhaps even more extreme. Even appears contemptuous of Muslim cricketers representing England…perish the thought…and he seems to think there are too many black footballers too!

No…I’m suggesting that at the GE there’ll be a carefully vetted and appropriate Labour candidate who will be a ‘shoe in’ in a place like Rochdale regardless of who wins tonight.

Who’s suggested there isn’t a problem? There are obviously huge problems, both worldwide and domestically but George Galloway is almost an irrelevance.
He’s stepped in, in his inimitable way, to fill a vacuum and take personal advantage. It’s typical Galloway, the other Parties, including those more likely to have your support, couldn’t profit from Labour’s c@ck up, but he’ll still be gone at the General Election when he’s replaced by a more carefully selected Labour candidate.

Funny thing, as Andy has already intimated, there was very little of the ‘Muslim bashing’ stuff on this thread prior to your return. I think it took you about two posts before the ‘grooming gang’, ‘terrorist’, they’re taking over the world anti Muslim rants started…so there is a problem, yes…and folk like you are a huge part of it.

I’m not disputing that GP is right and that ‘British politics is a right mess’, but to say that I’ve ‘ignored, excused and covered up’ the problem is laughable…and the only thing Galloway has tapped into is the vacuum left by the absence of an official Labour candidate and the fact that over 60% of Rochdale’s electorate stayed at home.
