  • Actually it looks to be post election debate so entirely on topic. Try as you might you cannot split off issues that the electorate feel relevant just because you don't think they are relevant. Elections (the subject) are granular and immigration is one of those grains.

It's like trying to stop a debate on new right backs in the transfer thread because YOU don't think we need one 😄

    • As far as ‘the moderator’ is concerned any political threads are open house for subjects as they arise, under the banner of ‘the putting the world to rights thread(s)’.

Maybe you should start your own immigration thread. Oh no, you did that didn’t you? Dedicated it to me for some obscure reason. Remind me…how many responses did it get, was it three or four…all but one with love from you to you!
Just fora bit of a change, why not check out / fact-check TTR’s numbers and offer a response? Not especially getting at you rA but in amongst his youtube scattergunning there’s some powerful stuff and currently only MA offers reasoned through responses. TTR might have made the numbers up for all I know but why not draw breath and consider it?

Probably because whilst there may be a grain of truth in Thickys ramblings, it is so jumbled up with falsehoods and outright lies that its not worth the effort? You can't argue with a sick mind and Thicky's is sicker than most.

So you choose not to respond to the issues raised but instead try to belittle the person. Just thinking who you share that approach with…ah! Got it.

I agree completely about the topic of immigration being something worthy of debate and have never described it as irrelevant GP, but…‘breaking news’…our election has been and gone and, judging by the result, it was not something as high up the electorate’s agenda as those of a right wing persuasion might have wished.

It’s certainly something which warrants discussion but not, as Swale has also suggested, in the hate fuelled obsessive manner that TTR goes about it. Tbf to him, he tried to start a thread specifically about immigration. Tbf to me…it failed to attract any attention on here and basically just ended up with him talking to himself.

              • So if the election has been and gone, let's close the thread

                • If you look at the opening post it pays at least as much attention to the U.S. election as the U.K. one and that still has about ten weeks to go. I guess there’s also the lame duck leadership election too.

Although, coincidentally to TTR’s efforts on the failed immigration thread, your call for discussion on the US election last week was met with indifference. Maybe TTR and yourself are both a bit too bothered about your respective hobby horses.

Didn’t ‘call for’ anything at all, AF. The thread is about this year’s elections (plural). I was just attempting to get us back on topic rather than banging on about driverless trains and train drivers.
If people want to discuss the U.S. election…fine. If they don’t…up to them. Either way it’s rather more important than being my ‘hobby horse’, wouldn’t you agree?

                      • What does everyone think of the alleged smoking bans in public places? I have never smoked and detest it, but not sure if i support an outright ban in pub gardens etc. For me pubs that have beer gardens that can provide a smoke free zone within the vicinity of doorways should be allowed to let someone smoke outdoors.

But not where food is consumed (cooked meals not pork scratchings)

                        • If labour stop me smoking a brisket, there's going to be some serious civil unrest!

All for it. IMO smoking (and therefore imposing second hand smoke on others) is ignorant. Personally I’m highly sensitive to whatever the residue is so even being near a non-smoking smoker is uncomfortable for me (like hay fever) but in general it’s the ignorance/lack of respect for others that tips the scales

The thread title refers to election (singular) as it happens....

No, oh pedantic one, it refers to year (singular). It is an election year on both sides of the Atlantic, that’s two elections, as is made crystal clear in the opening post.
