Correction he has the power and its in most people's interest to appease him! Just a shame he didn't do it, back in January when he could have, but pandered to Netanyahu until the bombing in Doha embarrassed him into action.

What privileged inside info do you have to support that?

          • let me think - Trump was inaugurated as president on 20th January 2025, before which he had none of the power and authority that his position gives him now. Come on Andy, of course he should have devised and brokered peace in israel/Palestine in the 10 days comprising the rest of that month. Even though no-one else had managed to get close to a deal in the preceding 15 months... but the magic man had 10 days to do it in - and wasted them on things like tarifs and other pressing domestic policy - what a disaster he is, and all those lost lives on his conscience for failing to provide an instant solution

Are you suggesting we were victims of SwaleTruth?

Yup, he?s struggling on that one, let?s see how he goes from now on

Strange that there?s a lot of angry people in America waving Palestine flags and a lot of happy people in Palestine waving American flags. Maybe in this spirit of people swapping, Trump could swap one cohort for the other

                  • Well however long he took, at least he has achieved what may be a lasting peace, although the cynic in me very much doubts it. Even a temporary cessation of hostilities will afford relief for the largely innocent civilian parties on both sides of the divide, and if something more lasting can be achieved then I feel Trump will have justified his return to office notwithstanding some of his other somewhat bizarre strategies. Ukraine? Well that may be more difficult but he has earned the praise of Putin for this deal, so maybe some ice will thaw.

And at least our cities and campuses may see less of that flag waving and those marches - and maybe all those supporters will have a chance to visit Gaza and assist with the rebuilding of the infrastructure and help deploy the food aid to the starving citizens now its (more) safe to do so. Mind you I'd see more chance of the peace lasting a year than that happening. They are now rebels without a cause, until they move on to a new one - perhaps the 500,000 christians slaughtered annually for their beliefs in Northern Nigeria by moslems (allegedly), although that might not be so on point and Tic Toc friendly.

                      • Agree if it's lasting it is an achievement. If someone achieves something significant it's good to acknowledge it whatever your political persuasion are.

Typically sensible, even handed and unblinkered comment.
Trump deserves some - not all - of the credit for the Israel/Gaza peace deal and to that extent it’s a case of credit where it’s due.
What he doesn’t deserve - at least not yet - is the Nobel Peace Prize and the reaction to him not getting it, both from him and his supporters has been more than a little churlish.
There would be a supreme irony about Trump being awarded such a ‘prize’ however, above all, the timing was simply wrong.
If, as commentators from the informed Jeremy Bowen to our own - slightly less illustrious - GP seem to suggest the deal is unlikely to last then little will have been achieved, by Trump or anyone else.
Come back in a year’s time Donald. IF - as I very much hope - the peace deal has held, strengthened even, then you will be a realistic, if unlikely, contender. Until then…we can but hope.

                          • I believe it's awarded based on the previous calender year achievement anyway.

We all, i hope, hope that this time next year we have peace, in Ukraine too.

He's welcome to the award if we are.

1.Correct Sith - "applications closed" back in January I believe so no way he could win the upcoming one. Next year maybe if as rA suggested it holds up.
                              2.Who is Jeremy Bowen?

Short lived it may be but I'm minded of an allegory. A man and his son were walking along a beach where the tide had washed up 100s of starfish. The man bent down and lobbed one starfish back into the sea. His son said "Why did you do that, Dad, there's so many it won't make a difference?". The father replied "It did to that one"
