As far as I can see with the new handicap system for male golfers going as high as 60, this encourages golf club members to get their handicap as high as possible to win the handicap golf competitions both in their own golf club and in open competitions.
My father used to say that the maximum handicap for golfers should be 18 with all golfers trying to aspire to have a handicap of 18 otherwise it encourages bandit hunters ( a golfing term).
I would be interested to know what Returnofrros thinks about my post.
    Pretty much spot on.

WHS has ruined club golf competitions.

You need a very vigilant handicap secretary but I'd suggest few clubs have them.

I gave away 23 shots in a matchplay tie a couple of years ago.....the guy won on the last with a par....his 5th of the round despite being a 30 handicap player.

As we shook hands he said " this is the greatest day of my life "......i just thought wow.

It's actually a shock now if a really low handicap player ( 5 or less ) wins against a 20 plus handicap player now.

Very few low handicap players enter the knockouts at our club for that reason.

My apologies I didn't realise you were the one handing out the strokes. Potentially messy job but obviously someone at the club has to do it.

I had coffee in Downfield Golf Club on 17th March 2026 with a friend I used to play golf at Downfield GC with until we ‘emigrated’ to live on Islay in August 2005.
          He?s been carpeted for that.

Four groups of 4 over 12 weeks, best 4 scores count, 2 qualify each group then quarters semis final until we have champ.

Cup day everybody tees off same time after league season

              3 rd year this year.

              2 different champs

              2 different cup winners

              I won cup last year

              Quite enjoy running it.

Knockout stages will be 75% of handicap this year.

I want it to slightly favour better players.....which isnae me.....I'm pot 3.

Handicap range 1 to 28 in comp, 15 men 1 woman.

                9 players single figures

You need to be a golfer to understand the golf terminology.

A couple of weeks ago I happened to meet a low handicap golfer who I remembered from my time as a member of Downfield GC.
I asked him if I was correct about problems with WHS.
He told me that the low handicap golfers at Downfield no longer play in the match play competitions because members at Downfield Golf Club can have a handicap as high as 60.
There have always been bandit hunters in golf clubs who keep their handicap as high as possible to try to win the match play competitions but having a handicap of 60 in my opinion is ridiculous.
If I had a genuine golf handicap of 60 I would be giving up the golf as there can be no satisfaction hacking your way round a golf course.

My golf handicap when I left Downfield Golf Club in 2005 was 6.6 having been as low s 4.9.
When I gave up playing golf in February 2011 my golf handicap was 10.6 as Machrie golf course on Islay was a far more difficult course to play than Downfield Golf course as Machrie is exposed to the wind
Downfield golf course has tree lined fairways which shelters it from the wind and makes it easier to keep your handicap.
Machrie golf course up to 2012 was rumoured to have been designed by Stevie Wonder as it had 13 blind holes.
It has since been redesigned by David J Russell and it is not a patch on the previous golf course layout.
The ‘new’ Machrie golf course has lost all its original character.

                            2 main problems with WHS

                            General play cards

Being able to quickly increase hcap again after large cuts

In my opinion they Scottish Golf Union and R & A should revert to only permitting scorecards in stroke play competitions counting for the WHS. Golfers who play a lot of golf can soon increase their handicap if they complete their score cards in general play.
It is also wide open to cheating such as playing partners conceding putts to each other which are then marked on their scorecard.
