I'm not sure what way this is gonna end up, we clearly can't afford to keep going the way we are going with the welfare state & the NHS, a Greece style bankruptcy is very real possibility. A life of sitting on your arse has never been more generous in my lifetime yet for some reason most still think people on benefits are eating wallpaper.

Means testing state pension seems to be gaining some traction.

      That will be civil war

And do what with the money you've deducted from them over the years?

This is being openly discussed within the labour party.

State pension to 74 and means tested.

Escape age rise if born 1966 and before.

The triple lock has to go first and foremost......tax relief at 40% on contributions into pensions has got to go.....I'd equalise tax relief at 25%......it was always erse about elbow giving higher rate tax payers a bigger relief.

But original point stands.....this country is in serious financial trouble.

Nothing has been deducted for pensions over the years.

                      Pensions are a benefit.

I am afraid Noah that you are spot on. No money has been saved onto a fund for the payment of state pensions. Every state pension is paid out of the current taxes raised each month.
Think there is no need to give highly paid people advantages when it comes to tax relief on pensions but there was pandemonium when they put a low limit on how much NHS consultants could pay into their pension pots. They had to pay so much more tax because they could not stuff their pension fund full of cash they did not need, or could not spend.

It is a benefit but people have built whole retirement planning with this benefit in mind.
