I loathe golf but always enjoy the Ryder Cup. Yesterday was a fantastic sporting spectacle and it's obviously satisfying to put the MAGAs and Rednecks back in their boxes. The USA players made a great attempt to comeback from an almost impossible position but it seemed that they (and the USA golfing establishment) did little to calm down the mindless idiots among the crowd.

This thread is rather perplexing. Do you play golf, belong to a country club or own one?
As a generalization the people who belong to country clubs or golf at high end clubs that host theses type events are the same people that own football clubs and steal from the masses as I understand your world view.
Just wondering why anyone would pay attention to any of this world unless you played the sport

Gold in the UK is generally a world away from the USA country club model. Most annual fees are similar to the cost of a season ticket for football and the further north you go the cheaper it gets.
Probably less than 20 clubs in the whole of the UK based on the US country club model.
By and large most clubs are a lot less stuffy and elitist than they were and fairly relaxed about dress codes etc.

Answer, I have played golf, recreationally not "competitively" and unlike the kind of establishment that hosts the Ryder Cup the courses I have played were "municipal", owned and operated by the local council with fees that reflected that situation.
The thread was aimed (as I'm sure you realise), at the disgusting and degrading behaviiur not only of the "MAGA masses" but some of the US players and their "crew". Little or nothing to do with actual golf, but then that's just about par for the course (see what I did there?) for the brain dead morons who subjected the European players to disgusting chants (including one iwf the presenters who to their credit has now resigned)
The World Cup next year promises to provide us with more of the same, making America great again, not.

Not sure it was aimed at you as a lot of golf in the US is very very elitist and nothing like golf here. Not uncommon to have annual subs of more than $100,000:Originally posted by WTF11 View PostAimed at me as I started the thread?

Apart from Surrey/Berkshire golf in the UK is much much more accessible.
I get the impression young Spaldy prefers his balls without dimples 😎

FWIW, I wasn?t aware that any sport of country had a monopoly on such behavior. Some simple ones that come to mind are three lions supporters at any country outside of the UK. I guess the same could be said of Brits in tourist areas in Spain. I also recall something about some place called Glastonbury
Hop is correct. Golf here in the US is elitist and largely the domain of very wealthy elites.
Country club and private golf clubs cost 10?s of thousands annually. Public courses cost less but still not uncommon for a $100 for 18 and a cart.
I?d hazard that under 10% of schools kids have ever played. Suspect it?s a dying sport other than rich Suburbs of big cities

You pay play public courses here for as little as $15 to 20 Spaldy and the sport is generally not that elitist outside of the top clubs.Originally posted by spaldy View PostFWIW, I wasn?t aware that any sport of country had a monopoly on such behavior. On the Ryder Cup Spaldy - there has been the odd occasion where fans of Team Europe got a little out of hand - Patrick Reed at Gleneagles comes to mind but generally in the Ryder Cup the personal insults and targeting of players started in 1991 in the US and the worst abuse has come from US fans.
Brookline in 1999 was pretty appalling in the way the fans went after Colin Montgomerie - his dad was so upset he left the event on day 2. As such, what happened at Bethpage is not unique it has just received more air time.
The stuff at Bethpage toward Rory and his wife was unbelievable and the fact fans threw drinks at her one of which hit her shows that whatever the line was it was well and truly crossed. There were a lot of kids attending and also the families of the players. The only person to have personally said sorry is tge US legend Tom
Watson. Rory McIlroy for his part has been fairly restrained in his post match comments ts.
Have to say the level of chants from the US crowd was generally poor and uninspiring. Sort of reflects the difference in football/soccer crowds either side of the pond too. Perhaps reflects the somewhat binary outlook of the small minority who are prone to ruin it for others.
Keegan Bradley is also a poor loser banging on about the injured player envelope rule. A lot of the US crowd left early too - sport is about more than just winning but seemingly not to everyone in Dixieland.

The Europeans are a masterclass when it comes to chants. I personally love it but understand it?s not everyone?s cup of tea. I?ve never been to any yank sporting event where any singing occurs.
Golf here would be like baseball is in the UK. It?s a fringe sport that is pretty much the domain of wealthy whites and Asians.
Thank you for the history lesson on the Ryder. However I wonder if it was just of yahoos and clowns just yelling and being buffoons rather than any real orchestrated payback for past actions.
Most Americans didn?t even know it was happening or even what the Ryder cup is. I?m happy it?s a big deal to the Europeans and they win since it means something. I caught a 4 pound smallmouth this weekend so I think I did better than the yanks did

Didn?t mean to be patronising if it came across as that but the Ryder Cup is a great institution - I used to play at a course where is was first played in the UK - back in 1929!
Small section of the crowd seemed to target players families which was unfortunate.
Congrats on the fish - hope it tasted good.
