  • Any Urgent critical issues that need addressing in English football now ?

easy to moan some say.......so any inventive ideas on here into solutions for a more sustainable football industry........

a decision to scrap the Premier League controversial Profit and Sustainability Rules and adopt an alternative system is coming up in November now.... says chief executive Richard Masters..........

behind the scenes a potential new squad cost ratio SCR system for financial control was actually been tested by the Premier League..... but only on a shadowing non binding basis.....SCR is similar to the Uefa existing financial rules and allows clubs to spend up to a percentage of their total revenues on squad related costs.......

nine of the Premier Leagues twenty clubs already have to comply with the Uefa rule of SCR as a result of qualifying for Europe.....both Chelsea and Villa were fined by Uefa in July for breaching those rules.......

its all about closer alignment with European regulation........particlary squad cost ratio.... which is a revenue test........ Uefa is currently set at 70 per cent but our system will be 85 per cent because we always want our clubs to have the ability to invest.......

ticket pricing for events including football and fans behaviour are bubbling sporting agendas again......

i do see potential worrying signs ahead for Leeds stadium redevelopment blueprint changes.......... upon our fans......

having no sentiment for the Manc red scarfe raisers.... i now see that there are currently home match protests in front of the Mancs directors at every home game over their ticket pricing....... which may start elsewhere soon ........

as an 81 year old Manc fan recently pointed out...... in that his old seating section in the stand now has padded seats .... and he has now seen adverts for match seats near where his old seat was for 599 quid a game ........ he was paying 23 quid a game for the same privileged seat but was relocated to other seats at the end of last season as his area was being turned into a corporate zone....... starting this season.

he had been sitting in the same seat since 1980....... the move had an additional sting for him as he also received communication saying season tickets were only going up 5 per cent....... but in his case the club also said the discount for pensioners concession rates was also to be cut out......so his now new relocated seat is costing him double the price...... as it was 420 quid in total last year and is now 840 quid due to pensioner concessions being scrapped.

hope they personally get relegated.......but what the hell is Premier League playing at and were is it going to end......certainly needs real fans to join forces and have a say now......... and the football regulator to listen and act.

luckily not quite as bad with regard to european clubs ticket pricing...... but the Milan stadium redevelopment of the San Siro has got their ultra fans in a frenzy of which they have raised some serious financial backing to raise concerns on their behalf......
so an interesting continental mail bag to sort out for me on behalf of the Football Supporters Europe network next week.......

and possibly a very large correspondence tray from angry Sheffield Wednesfay fans for David Kogan....... who has just been appointed as the first chair of English footballs new independent regulator.

Nowhere near as important as the financial stuff, but the referees should be required to wear different coloured shirts, shorts and socks to both the outfield teams snd goalkeepers.

I have five different ?official? shirts for this season and i only cover Mickey Mouse games these days.

There is no good reason for officials of the professional game to ever match the players on the pitch.

    Pet peeve vented!

Subs shouldn’t be allowed near the touchline when warming up, or be involved in celebrations.
Shouldn’t be seen until the substitution is happening.
      Another pet peeve.

I think the officiating is poor at the prem and championship level. They just keep recycling the worst of them

Give the coaches input. Not sure how to do it best but the concept is sound. No one will want the substandard ones. Over time a pattern will clearly emerge

Pay the good ones more and bring in some fresh talent. For the amount of money that goes through the prem get rid of the poor ones

There isn't enough time left for the whole of humanity to allow for a comprehensive and studious response to that question. Let's just say "lots" and have done with it.

I cant pronounce ĥalf of the premier leagues teams names,we need more English players in squads.Too many "off comed uns " taking their places for ridiculous sums of money. Squads should be limited to 2 overseas players ..Let's get our up and coming young stars given a chance.

More chance of finding "hobbyhorse schite " than that happening though. 🙃

Refs clamping down on dissent and backchat more, time wasting for throws or GK and taking throws from obviously the wrong position - teams sometimes steal 25m.

They are clear rules around these and they should be properly enforced.

More on topic clubs should think about donating tickets for undersold games to either schools or to the emergency services. Good for the game, good for attendances and great to connect with the community.

so are we are all happy in the 2025/26 new rules introduction and enforcement of them.......

including the 8 second rule for goalkeepers...... the stricter rule for player referee interactions via the captains only approach meaning only one player from each team may approach for explanations of important decisions to prevent refs being hassled..... and the use of the lighter Puma balls dilemmas ..... plus the ability for referees to communicate VAR decisions to fans in stadiums direct all now in force ?

i am ok with the 8 second rule which sees goalkeepers penalised for holding the ball for more than eight seconds...... so a corner will be awarded to the opposing team if a keeper exceeds this time limit now.

also the player ref interaction were only the team captain is permitted to approach the ref during a match and that other players who do will receive a booking..... all ok for me.

not sure on technology and the VAR ref cam trials....... as the the league is now testing referee cameras on the officials shirts in selected matches to provide a different perspective for replays.......

other changes that may not suit the purists including me that have crept in are those tv reporter touchline interviews...... also allowing reporters to conduct touchline interviews with recently substituted players.........
no probs either with how players warm up with the number of substitutes allowed to warm up simultaneously along the sideline been increased from three to five to align with the five subs rule.

good that referees are also now generally maintaining stronger measures to reduce time wasting and disruption tactics....... obviously the added on time has been crucial in many matches so far.....resulting in many late goals scored and conceded.

for me....... the new Puma lighter ball which Arteta claims has become more unpredictable for goalkeepers is a game changer....... as it is more like a volleyball and it moves in the air so much unlike all previous balls used in competition....... it is also extremely slippery which makes it difficult to handle......so there will be a lot of mistakes this season handling it for keepers....... you certainly will not be seeing many clean catches this season..... and many strikers have complained its harder to control because of its movement......... so more miss hits and spills over the ninety minutes awaiting as winter weather approaches...... on the Green Green Grass of Home !

As I indicated in my previous (somewhat shorter !) reply, the above is mostly fiddling while Rome burns.....considerably more significant changes are required if we are to avoid ending up with a rev i t a l ised European Super League proposal, or a migration towards the NFL model (much of a muchness I guess). All you mention are ok in my book (apart from the touchline interviews (with anyone, players or coaches) they should be discarded ASAP), including the Puma ball, if it's harder for everyone (presuming the change is made to all levels of the game simultaneously and on a global basis (lucky Puma!)), so what?

Like I say, systemic issues with the games oversight and governing structures, but they won't be addressed because amongst many others, Infantino doesn't want to.

Like the 8 second rule a lot. Not sure it's totally enforced but it's gotten better. I personally think the second offense in a game deserves a yellow card. Some really long 8 second counts. It should start once they have possession of the ball (including laying on the ground clutching the ball). Some of them act like it's a mating session with the ball.

In my younger days (many moons ago) played in an adult league and my team gradually got better and better. worked it's way up to city championship level. Home team supplied the ball. Did a lot of research on balls and went with a Puma 18 panel all white ball. It was markedly lighter and very, very lively. Didn't use it on wet or snowy pitches. It was vastly different than the standard match ball of the day.

The other thing i did was research pitch dimensions. Football is rather ambiguous on what a field can be. we had a large patch of good grass for the pitch and I marked it huge. Had to be a rectangle but beyond that there is a lot of latitude.

Both of the above were huge "home field" advantages. Had a lot of in shape players and the lively ball created a lot of chances. It's an unbelievable difference.
