I can’t see him surviving this. If he does, the British public deserve all they get. I’m not sure he’ll have the decency to resign, so it could be down to the Tory MPs to get rid of him. They must be keeping a very nervous eye on the opinion polls.

The most staggering statement made today was when the no mark junior minister sent to face the flak while Boris cowardly hid away actually said “The prime minister retains the confidence of the people of this country." What planet is he on? That is a palpable and blatant lie. The government have no respect for the people who voted them in at all. Their strategy seems to be that if things get difficult, tell a lie. If it gets more difficult, just tell a bigger lie. We deserve so much better than this.

Those statements made me feel ill! Boris is so obviously a man of integrity he seemed to be saying - I hope BJ isn't still smirking when the outcome of the investigation is complete.

What was very revealing was how many of the Cabinet were there to back up their Leader.

I think Johnson is a goner this time. There’s no way that anybody is going to believe that Martin Reynolds arranged that party without his prior knowledge and consent, and this precludes any route of exit.

The Tory party will decide he’s a vote loser and get rid.Many of them will be sharpening their weaponry already.

The mechanics of electing a new party leader are a lengthy process. I can’t see Johnson being asked to stay on as “caretaker” while they go through it. Perhaps we’ll get Raab (Deputy Leader) in an acting capacity while the likes of Truss and Sunak fight it out for the permanent position.

I'm afraid you're right.

Boris' sense of direction went out of the door with Dominic Cummings and he's been on a slippery slope ever since. In politics and especially at the head of government, if you don't have a strong ideology and a clear idea of what you're trying to achieve, then it's only a matter of time before you come unstuck. You might be able to wing it for a while if you have a political advisor or second-in-command with those robust attributes, but really the leadership has to come from the leader.

You would think it should be obvious, but the starting point for any party leader/PM is to only promote and advocate policies you actually believe in and live by yourself, then whatever else happens in an unpredictable world, at least you won't be accused of hypocrisy.

Both parties could do with going back a couple of generations to 'old school' politicians who actually have some idea what they stand for (apart from furthering their own careers) and have the gravitas and experience to stay on course. Sadly, there aren't too many left!
