    • The Labour Party have certainly deserted the working classes they were founded to represent .
I was a TU nominated CLP delegate and quit in 1982, being concerned with the direction the policies were heading back then.
Certainly a very different Party than the Harold Wilson, Barbara Castle types.
Kinnock didn't support the miners in the 1984/85 strike and it would have been interesting if the current " pro union " Party hierarchy had been around then. Of course they would have been in Opposition not Government.
Blair (Son of Thatcher) and Brown were certainly not of the Wilson ilk either.
It is naive to think that any elected Government has a free hand , being puppets rather than Leaders.
The Callaghan Government was bailed out financially and forced to follow IMF diktats which seems to have been a turning point in British politics.
Reeves looks set to press ahead with ruthlessly targeted taxes and despite vowing to improve public transport, is tipped to remove the £2 bus fare cap in December.
To sum it all up, it seems that they are eagerly carrying out policies that are being formulated in Davos, rather than promoting the wishes of the electorate. The PM himself, on record of stating an allegiance.

If it’s properly means tested it’s really not that unfair is it ?
The trouble is though that it's estimated around 760,000 eligible older people aren't claiming pension credit. They're likely to be the most vulnerable, so people like those suffering with dementia, disabilities or socially isolated. They'll lose the fuel allowance.

Off course all the headlines from the tory press ! Dismissing the 23 Billion pound black hole that has lead to cuts. Why not focus on the old regime the designed the overspend to lead us where we are today. Know wonder the Tories were vocal about rising taxes from labour because they knew their hidden bomb would lead to increases when it was eventually uncovered ..

Most of us have concentrated on the rabble that was in before, disastrous comes to mind but again you have to balance it and that’s what yourself, BFP, Och etc (I’ve ommited Elite as he came on here and posted about Labours disasters with some balanced views) unfortunately until you accept that all the parties are as bad as each other and stop thinking that Liebour are any different this act of constant denial will continue. Top and bottom of it is that we are in an even worse place than the Tories left with the deniers blaming this fictitious 22 Billion black hole.

Martin Lewis' interview with Lisa Nandy the other day was a complete car crash for Nandy. She seemed to think that the 40,000 new applications for pension credit was excellent. Lewis pointed out the 720,000 that will not be able to get their winter fuel benefit was a disgrace. He was absolutely livid and so he should be.
I agree those that have the money should not be gotting it but the cut off is far too low. It needs to be a proper sliding scale but tehy say that'll cost more than everyone getting the money, how?!!! Don't the government use computers to automatically do this???

                    Far too sensible comments.
Common sense long since sacrificed on the altar of PC policies.

That’s not a fault of the current government. As I said help with that sort of claiming and proper means testing would help those in need so the benefits go to the right people.

I remember proper means testing when my Mother (a single parent, sod all help for them in those days!) tried to claim dole when I was a kid (58/59 time). They sent her packing and then two blokes turned up at the house and rifled through every draw and cupboard in the place. They would probably seen half a cup of sugar and a bottle of sour milk 'cos we had phluck all (and some people say they are hard done to these days, my backside!).
Of course there are people that need that money and it's a disgrace that such a piffling total expenditure by a "caring" government should be stopped.

The only benefits will go to kneeler for new clothes and specs and for his slapper understudy.

                          • Yes I remember those days. Benefit was a word you didn’t hear of apart from child benefit of course.

Lol. If they were the centre, who is to the right of them exactly?

The anti-Jewish sentiment tolerated under Corbyn was horrific and I was not a member of the Labour party at that time.

Yeah rubbish. The vast majority of protestors - including many from the Jewish community - deplore Hamas and Hezbollah.

That those terrorist organisations exist doesn't mean I am going to be happy about Israel slaughtering my friends and colleagues. Those who cheer or shrug every time Israel kills another baby or toddler - and its aggression has seen the death of almost 10 Palestinians under five every day since the disgusting attack by Hamas and others a year ago - aren't going to get my support either.

They aren't all as bad as each other. The Tories were uniquely terrible and were rightly kicked out. Labour is doing what it said it would do, but so far not very convincingly or effectively it would seem. Starmer desperately needs a better narrative. But it's not his fault every public service has been left in shambles, that pension credit was being denied to hundreds of thousands who should be getting it - or indeed that pensioners spent the last ten years being coddled (relatively). And the last government did very little of consequence. Doesn't excuse the mistakes Starmer and his team has made, but the official opposition is supposed to the the Tories, not the press.

I’m amazed that no government in my lifetime has ever managed to give benefits to those who need and deserve it, and not to those who just can’t be arsed and want a free ride. I have no problem with my winter fuel allowance being removed, but I’m disappointed that it will mean real hardship for some who really do need it.
