No hurt feelings, but what I (and maybe sid) actually said was that the Tory party members rather than the Tory party MPs were unlikely to elect a Hindu non-white PM. The parliamentary party clearly favoured Sunak last time around, but the members went for Truss instead. If Boris Johnson had really managed to get 100 nominations (he clearly didn't), then I have absolutely no doubt that the blue rinse and gammon brigade would have had him back in 10 Downing Street on Friday.

Apparently he did. I agree that members would have brought him back though. Hopefully he realised how divisive he would be. Choice of cabinet will be really important, hopefully he won't have Dorries in it - she is still going on about Boris.Originally posted by Elite_Pie View PostNo hurt feelings, but what I (and maybe sid) actually said was that the Tory party members rather than the Tory party MPs were unlikely to elect a Hindu non-white PM. Looking forward to PMQ's on Wednesday.

Paul Mullin’s gone up in my estimation.
Paul Mullin is a folk hero in Wrexham – and he’s made it pretty clear where his political loyalties lie with his new custom-made boots. As Rishi Sunak was named the new leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister of the UK, the tumultuous and chaotic state of politics in the UK has never […]

This. On LBC yesterday someone called in who was a tory member and said he thinks about 80% support Boris and Sunak isn't even British. If Boris would have run against Sunak then hello Boris. The caller said Sunak doesn't care about the English but Boris does. He cares so much that whilst my uncle couldn't visit my aunt in hospital before she died to say goodbye, he partied whilst fellow party attendees threw up in the bins. God bless Boris. At least Sunak was born in England I guess for the true blues, not sure they know Boris was born in New York.Originally posted by Elite_Pie View PostNo hurt feelings, but what I (and maybe sid) actually said was that the Tory party members rather than the Tory party MPs were unlikely to elect a Hindu non-white PM. Are you saying he apparently he had 100 nominations? Really? To believe that, you would have to believe these three things:Originally posted by magpie_mania View PostApparently he did. I agree that members would have brought him back though. Hopefully he realised how divisive he would be.
1. Boris Johnson tells the truth.
2. Boris Johnson tells the truth where numbers are concerned - do you remember 40 new hospitals and £350 million Brexit cash to the NHS?
3. Boris Johnson would put the needs of the country above his own personal ambition.
If you believe a single one of the above m_m, I hope Santa Clause brings you lots of presents. We'll never know the truth, but this is my view, and I would put big money on it being right given the chance:
1. Boris Johnson cut his holiday short and rushed home thinking he was still popular.
2. The likes of Nadine Dorries and Jacob Rees-Mogg convinced him he was still popular.
3. Slowly but surely, reality hit home and he realised he was only popular with 60-70 arse lickers.
4. When he realised he couldn't stand because he was way short of the 100 nominations, he openly lied about the numbers to try and save face.
5. Him and his arse lickers (like Dorries, JRM and the ex-poster on here) will be doing all they can to destabilise Sunak in the hope that he will fail and Boris can take over for the next election.
I've had the pleasure on winning decent money betting that Johnson and Truss would lose their job this year. That pleasure is tempered by the realisation that we are still stuck with an incompetent and divided government.

Sorry you went to all that trouble - I genuinely thought I heard today that the 1922 Committee had confirmed he had 102 backersOriginally posted by Elite_Pie View PostAre you saying he apparently he had 100 nominations? Really? To believe that, you would have to believe these three things:

I don't believe any of your points 1 - 3. Boris has no concept of what truth is and will say anything to further himself.

You possibly did. I'm sure the 1922 Committee would put honesty and integrity above all else and if he didn't get really 100 nominations, they would have made it public knowledge that Boris Johnson openly lied! It was a private vote where the real result will never be known, so do you think as Tories they might have gone for damage limitation?Originally posted by magpie_mania View PostSorry you went to all that trouble - I genuinely thought I heard today that the 1922 Committee had confirmed he had 102 backers.
I know you're not a betting man m_m, but I followed the odds. If Boris Johnson really had got the support he claimed, he would quickly have been long odds on. Instead the closer to the deadline, the more Johnson drifted. The bookies don't care what the truth is or who wins, but in my experience the odds they offer reflects the reality of any given situation more than any media reports.

And mine - I really hope he scores enough with those boots to finish second (and then draw a blank in the final as they lose to York).Originally posted by BigFatPie View Post

You are right about not betting, but I do sometimes look at the odds for different things. It was noticeable how much Boris was drifting.Originally posted by Elite_Pie View PostYou possibly did. I concur with all you have said here, Elite. No way would Risky Sunhat have got the Premiership if it had gone to a vote of members. Bozo would be reinstalled because the stupid planks (and County Grump) think Bozo's rejection was all about eating cake instead of the removal of a serial liar who even deceived the Queen.Originally posted by Elite_Pie View PostNo hurt feelings, but what I (and maybe sid) actually said was that the Tory party members rather than the Tory party MPs were unlikely to elect a Hindu non-white PM. Risky is their best bet because he's a smart operator and from all accounts takes note of the detail - that which Bozo never did. Having said that he's going to prescribe some terrible cuts, especially local government because that makes it look like HM government is not as blameworthy.
His immense wealth is his achilles heel. Whilst he heats up a swimming pool within his gardens, the community pool within his constituency cannot afford the heating so thousands of people are denied swimming. He is said to be richer than the king and whilst that's not a crime, it doesn't sit well with the man responsible for determining cuts, cuts and more cuts. Like Truss, he's all for trimming the size of the state.

With all the debt we are in don’t you think a labour or Lib Dem government will have to implement drastic cuts if elected? Or is it only a problem if the person doing it is rich?Originally posted by sidders View PostI concur with all you have said here, Elite. Politically it could be toxic. But here's some ideas to be going along with. Do you think Richy will implement any of them ? Wonder why.Originally posted by i961pie View PostWith all the debt we are in don’t you think a labour or Lib Dem government will have to implement drastic cuts if elected? Reverse the funding to energy company paid for by borrowing
Implement windfall taxes
Introduce wealth tax
Abolish capital gains tax and tax gains as income
Introduce NI on investment income
Launch investigations into COVID fraud and illegal VIP-lane PPE contracts and recover ill-gotten contracts
Super tax on bankers bonuses
Increase stamp duty (SDLT) on higher value property
Introduce capital gains tax on main homes gains over £150k
Just for starters !
Edit: Oh and... duh.. abolish non-dom statusLast edited by frenchmagpie; 25-10-2022, 01:44 PM.
