Oh, and lots of good people. Sounds a lot like the last incoming, now quiet, board member.

It is not the strangest close season perhaps, but it is a serious one now, not because nothing is progressing. That may not be because nobody is trying.
The answer lies with what came before, long before, sowed the seeds and was not acted upon sooner, because they had no nous.
Really, it is not surprising I think. Once a coach, manager, call it whatever you like is installed, is it all suddenly going to kick into gear?
They cannot even get IT sorted and incorrect DD invoices sent out, or respond to someone who has had one.

I get that people want a moan. It has been a miserable couple of years to be a Rotherham supporter and the heady days of multiple promotions to the Championship and visits to Wembley seem a long time ago.
What troubles me is the willingness to assume that the club is automatically at fault in every decision and event.
For example, Lee Clark ends up with Hartlepool and that is immediately seized upon as evidence of incompetence or of him having been treated badly because of his reported comments in an article in the press. There doesn't appear to be any consideration that maybe Clark - who had obvious skin in the game - was doing a bit of spinning when he spoke to the Tizer and that maybe the reality is a little more nuanced, with him being asked to hold his fire for a couple of weeks whilst the club where able to get a new Director of Football in place and see how the possibility of new ownership played out.
Another example is what appears to be criticism of the lack of activity in the transfer market even though the vast majority of players are contracted until today, which means that there is no prospect of any real activity until tomorrow at the earliest.
Maybe lighten up, enjoy the sunshine and wait to see how things play out? It?s a lot less stressful that poring over every Paul Davis article to find fault that might not actually be there.Last edited by KerrAvon; 31-05-2026, 08:09 AM.

I really hope you’re successful with your new set up but listening to SM’s interview my worry is that it’s all about him. He’ll decide on the players, he’ll decide on the type of football and he’ll decide on the coach who oversees it. That worries me because it smacks of interference.
At Bolton we have a similar system with Stephen Schumacher as coach and Fergal Harkin Sporting director but they both work together to decide on player recruitment and systems along with our Head of Scouting, Jimmy Dickinson. All 3 work together to agree who and what we need but Schuey is definitely the initial voice on what he needs. Doesn’t sound like that’s how it will work with McClaren who just seems like he wants to be a billy big balls with a finger in everything.
I have to admit that I’ve never liked McClaren, the wally with the brolly tag fits him well and whilst I have little confidence he’ll improve things for you I sincerely hope for my granddaughters sake, who was gutted at the relegation by the way, and especially the fact you won’t be stuffing Wanderers as you usually do, I hope I’m wrong and it all works out. Other than a spell in Lincoln I’ve lived in S Yorks for over 40 years and my family are Millers so I do have a big soft spot for the club and want them to do well. You shouldn’t be in L2 so hopefully this coming season will be a good one despite my reservations.

Let's be honest, lots on here can't wait to pounce on anything that us perceived as slow, tight, unprofessional or shifty to do with the club.
This is usually aimed at Tony Stewart , Paul Douglas ,or the manager, often one who left long ago.
While the current situation, re the manager ,isn't ideal, nobody is signing players at the minute, so as long as they are in place very soon,no biggie really.
Enjoy this nice weather before all the madness starts again.
Or just ask Hensons mate,he's usually got all the info.

You can call it interference or call it setting the culture and consistency at the club. Someone who doesn't like Steve McClaren is likely to use the former.Originally posted by BarnsleyWhites View PostI really hope you?re successful with your new set up but listening to SM?s interview my worry is that it?s all about him. The reality is that since Paul Warne left the club, we've had a series of poor decisions which have ultimately got us to where we are now. But not only that, we've had managers who all did different things, sometimes due to circumstance, sometimes not. So what this club needs is a clear strategy (on and off the field) to move things forward, rather than flitting from one idea to the next everytime we change the manager.
That's essentially what he's here to do. The new Head Coach is bound to have an understanding of the structure and his role within that structure and SM will choose someone who is happy to work within that.
So it is probably nothing to do with being a 'billy big balls' and everything to do with the role that the club have decided to appoint him.

Very fair response 78 and it may be my attitude to SM that clouds my judgement but he just seemed to come across as a bit of a know it all. You?re right though, he has to set the standards and if as we hope you?re going to come straight back up there?s a lot of changes to make. You?re also right on the player signing front as most players and managers will currently be on holiday and of course the window hasn?t been open to make signings. I suspect you?ll lose one or two you wouldn?t want to, most obviously Sam Nombe who is probably your most saleable asset and for sure won?t want to play L2 football. He might even come to Wanderers as was speculated in January? Like him or not I do hope SM sorts things out for you because there?s no way millers should be in L2.
