It contained a ridiculous characterisation of climate change as being a ?shortage of polar bears?. It is, of course, so much more. It has the capacity to render it harder or impossible to grow food in large swathes of the world, to render swathes of the world uninhabitable and to make extreme and destructive weather events far more common. Reducing it to a ?shortage of polar bears? in the comfort of the Oxford Union may act as a comfort blanket for people who don?t like unpalatable truths, but that won?t help.

Bear in mind that climate change also has the capacity to drive mass migration, including the irregular migration that is causing such consternation around the world (and, ironically, often to those who also preach climate change denial).

The video contained a ludicrous false dichotomy ? that people have to choose between action on climate change and the survival of their children and having indoor toilets. The real choice is between action against climate change and the descent of the world into a place where the survival of children becomes far less certain. Bear in mind that many of the poorer countries in the world are places that are particularly vulnerable to the impact of climate change. Dead people don?t need toilets ? indoor or otherwise.

The video does contain some grains of reality ? that the richer counties in the world are going to have to assist the rest to make the necessary change and that technological solutions will play a part.

And, of course, the video ignores the elephant in the room, which is that oil and gas are finite resources (unless you have been hanging around some of the really weird parts of Twitter). We are going to have to decarbonise, so why not do it now and on our terms

If you really like rich kids making stupid arguments, may I recommend a subscription to The Spectator for Christmas.
Well firstly I'm not a climate change denier and neither is Konstantin Kissin as far as I'm aware .

I think some of the speech was tongue in cheek and fairly typical of a man who has entered the political debate but comes from a stand up comedian background when addressing Oxford students , the context was obvious to me knowing his background .

The points he made I thought were a pretty honest appraisal in my opinion of human nature and the problems associated with major pollution contributors to the world .

I'd also add to his comments even further by suggesting that politicians aren't capable of solving this issue , politicians aren't capable of providing enough food or shelter for their populations in many country's so why do people believe they will solve something that probably won't impact on them in either their term in office or their lifetimes ?

The electorate by nature aren't going to vote for anybody who makes their lives less convenient or more expensive and if they did the opposition would cash in and replace them with policies that wouldn't .

The short reply is mankind isn't capable of saving this planet and unfortunately things will play out as they play out .

How many of us are prepared to give up air travel and ditch our holidays abroad and reduce our own carbon footprint ?

It's as easy as that and yet almost none of us would do it and I'm no exception .

In fact I'd like to go on more holidays which means boarding even more aircraft and seen as I'm at the time of my life where I'm able to enjoy more holidays which isn't consistent with the greater part of my life I don't have any concerns about doing so .

So someone had better invent an aircraft that isn't responsible for 5% of all emissions that harm the planet because that's the only way it works for me .

No one is willing to give them up so the question is how can they be encouraged to do so. If encouragement isn?t enough then forcing people to give them up is the only alternative.

This is of course can only be done in a controlled way. Maybe this is the reason you can only buy flights using credit or debit cards.

It?s all pie in the sky obviously.

Someone on here recently described your attitude as condescending. Ever wonder why?

I think forcing people to do anything after lockdowns during the height of the covid pandemic is going to be met with some resistance in my opinion frog and that was with a cross party consensus and there's always a party willing to cash in and tell the electorate what they want to hear .

Replacement by invention seems to me to be the only show in town , inconvenience and extra expense most certainly won't work .

If invention becomes an opportunity for extortion then that's unlikely to work either .

My opinion is that governments should look at public transport and invest in that and work from there as a starting point with legs in it .

I don't need to wonder why. I have enough self-awareness to know exactly why people might find me condescending.

I was paying you a compliment.

Although I agree with much of what you?ve said please allow me to play devil?s thingy.

The system used in china is a credit control culture. The amount of cameras monitoring their people is unmatched anywhere else in the world.
It is said that they can reduce your credit score for not using a zebra crossing.

I know that the French banking system allows the bank to see what you have spent your money on and the tellers are determined by that as to whether they?ll offer an overdraft.

Imagine everyone has to use the digital currency and the camera system in the western world becomes as good as in china.

You could be given a quoted of flights and no more. They?ll have the ability to stop you purchasing a flight.

All control will be lost wouldn?t it. People will just accept it just to be able to eat.

Sounds a bit Orwellian to me but I take your point .

The thing is Frog the world spins on money , restrictive practices tend to fly in the face of that , no pun intended .

Imagine the economies that would suffer without tourism , the airlines that would collapse and all the other businesses that are linked to all kinds of travel .

Someone's going to have to come up with an electric aircraft that is capable of keeping itself airborne for at least 8 hours with 250 passengers on board , the time it takes to fly from Manchester to New York for instance .

Long haul to Australia would involve stopping a couple of times for recharging which shouldn't be anymore than an hours job .

You'd obviously hope the charge left function in the cockpit would be reasonably accurate of course !!

They reckon that the car parks already built would not be strong enough to fill up with all electric cars so the possibility of getting an aircraft light enough is difficult to imagine.
A safe zeppelin may be the answer?

I'm only speaking for myself Frog and trying to be as honest as I can with regard to this issue even though it probably doesn't paint me in a great light regarding the planet .

I don't particularly want to spend any longer on an aircraft than I do now , 2 hours and 30 minutes to Malaga is long enough for me , inventing things that turn that flight in to 6 hours or 10 simply won't do .

Whether I'm your average Joe Punter who thinks the same I don't know .

I and the vast majority would agree with that.

As we progress towards ending the sale of new fossil-fuel vehicles and hybrid vehicles in the UK by 2030, EVs of all shapes and sizes will eventually
