Dear Dr. Sachs,We are a group of economists, including many Ukrainians, who were appalled by your statements on the Russian war against Ukraine and were compelled to write this open letter to address some of the historical misrepresentations and ...

ReArm Europe is a strategic defense initiative proposed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on March 4, 2025, aimed at enhancing the European Union's military capabilities. It was unveiled in a letter to European leaders ahead of a European Council meeting on March 6, 2025. The plan seeks to mobilize up to €800 billion to strengthen Europe's defense infrastructure in response to geopolitical threats, notably the ongoing war in Ukraine and uncertainties over U.S. military support.

They do say that to keep the peace you have to prepare for war which is fair enough .

However there's probably more chance of a European city probably in Germany or France receiving an attack from Islamist extremists than from Putin , a probability appraisal would probably have the chances at an extreme high percentage .

The attack will probably be carried out by people who were welcomed in to Europe and offered a new life here .

If the European political class want to look all tough on all things to the East they may want to remind themselves that the biggest terror threat comes from a demographic they welcomed here despite not knowing who a good number of them were .

As you probably know I live in France. We often see squadies walking round the town centre of Limoges. You also hear people saying thank you to them. The police are armed here as well.

I hope the intention of the EU and Macron is not to escalate but to support what Ukraine have managed to keep. If the idea is to take back the land from Russia then it will take forever and our kids will have a more uncertain future.

You may not agree, but can you see why some people might have the perspective that the more succesful Rssia is in invading a country and stealing territory, the more likely they and other countries are to try and do it in the future and the more dangerous and uncertain future we will have?

Aye we have armed police officers patrolling our major city Xmas markets these days .

The thing is the political class over here aren't too enthusiastic about telling us why we need armed police officers patrolling our major city Xmas markets .

Do you really need them to spell it out? I don't hear anyone giving specific reasons why armed police patrol airports, major sporting events, political rallies and here in the US even schools and the office building where I work. There are nutters in the world that come from all walks of life that's why.

So you are comparing border points such as airports and political rallies with UK Xmas Markets ? .

So presumably every major weekday UK market would also attract armed police officers or even Sunday car boots perhaps , except they don't .

Your attempt to normalise this is extraordinary .

I found your need to infer what you did in reply to Frog's post equally as extraordinary and tenuous. You know why the Xmas markets have armed protection so why even mention it and the 'cover up'?

I could ask why did you, a Barnsley FC fan feel the need to come on a RUFC message board and make a post on a thread about Elon Musk (although I admit it has wandered O/T somewhat) to point out that the police in the UK are armed especially to protect attendees at a Christmas market? Only you know the answer to that question.

Just wait until he finds out what guns do to them.
