£5 billion seems incorrect Al? The House of Commons Library gives the figure of £2.8 billion for 2024 and a Reuters fact check for 2024/25 says the UK spent approx £108 million a month on housing asylum seekers as opposed to the grossly exaggerated figure of £1 billion a month doing the rounds on social media. This would equate to £1.3 billion that financial year for housing alone making the total of £2.8 billion a year more likely than £5 billion. Still way too much of course.

As for Ratcliffe, I'm sure he paid a considerable amount of personal tax whilst he was in the UK and whilst his motives for moving to Monaco were likely varied I'm sure that, aside from climate/ culture, the over riding factor was tax saving. He has more than enough money himself though, so he could certainly still have afforded to remain in the UK. Entirely up to him where he choses to live or what he does with his money, but making some of those comments just seems a tad hypocritical given that his decision to move abroad was mostly driven by tax avoidance.

In terms of Ratcliffe his words were very clumsy but the overall content was correct. Benefits are out of control ( mainly whites ) and if it were me I would offer an individual a couple of jobs after perhaps 1 year in drawing benefits - any refusal would stop benefits. Even cleaning graffiti off walls or community work should be offered. I was brought up with the meaning of there?s no such thing has a free lunch.

As for Ratcliffe leaving the UK honestly - I think me or you would do the same out of principle. Perhaps tax rules should be changed or incentives given for billionaires to stay and invest.
