Most Definitely.Originally posted by baggieal View PostAnyone looking forward to the opening match Thursday?
Hopefully it's a memorable event, both the opening ceremony and the football match.
It's the first match with the additional rules so need to see if any are applied.
But before then England are playing tonight against Costa Rica.
Bring it on.

I would have agreed with you 'it is a stupid thing to say' but recent conversations I've had have changed my opinion. Many are anti-Trump and anti-USA to an extent they wouldn't contemplate visiting right now.Originally posted by baggieal View PostCome on that?s a stupid thing to say - ? many would not visit the US with its current political regime ?. FFS and heard it all now!
8 of us were sat in the pub last week. I was shocked by the vehemence of a good mate of mine who had a pathological hatred of the man and the country. Of the 8 of us only my wife and I would visit right now.
The subject also came up at my running club on Monday and again I was surprised by how many chirped up just how against they were. One actually considered it dangerous.
A mate of mine's step son and his family had been living in Albany NY for 15 years and had said 'If Trump is elected we're leaving' and sure enough they are now living in the village and loving it.
I still think there is a lot of good in the States but I fast believe I am becoming a minority.

Afternoon 9goais. Get what you are saying but I would never go/not go to a country on who the leader is. I feel safer in the States than over here in the places we visit. The USA News is full of the stories of illegals here - knife crime - and the brutal stabbings and rapes of innocent girls. There will be a lot of Americans who would not come to the UK that?s for sure and rather go to countries like Italy.Originally posted by 9goals2hattricks3pen View PostI would have agreed with you 'it is a stupid thing to say' but recent conversations I've had have changed my opinion. Most of the UK traffic to the USA for obvious reasons is to Orlando and I would find it hard to believe that a parent would forego a trip to Disney for their kids over Trump.
I hear what you are saying though and many who say - I would never go to the USA because of Trump are usually the ones who would never visit the country anyway.
I found New York in March far safer than London that?s for sure! This country is getting to be lawless.

I know, I said I would not continue to take this thread off topic. However, seeing has no one has added anything to it and Al has views that go against the evidence out there, here is something which shows if you actually do some research you can find the truth rather than simply stating one’s own incorrect take on a situation.Originally posted by baggieal View PostAfternoon 9goais. New York City generally has higher rates of violent crime, particularly homicide and gun related offenses than London, whereas London often experiences higher rates of reported property crimes like burglary and robbery.
Comparing safety levels across the two metropolises involves weighing different categories of crime and local factors.
Lethal Violence: New York consistently records a significantly higher homicide and gun-violence rate than London. For example, data over recent years shows NYC’s murder rate per 100,000 residents is generally 2.5 to 4 times higher than London's.
Firearms vs. Knives: The disparity in lethality is largely driven by gun accessibility. While London grapples with knife crime and youth stabbings, firearms account for the majority of NYC's homicides.
Burglary and Theft: When it comes to volume crimes, London often reports higher rates of residential burglaries, street robberies, and theft, partially influenced by differences in urban layouts and local reporting standards.
General Perception: Forum discussions on platforms suggest a consensus that both cities are large global metropolises with "bad" and "safe" areas, but extreme physical violence remains much rarer in the UK capital.
Across both countries, the incidence of serious violent crime per capita is between three and seven times as high in the United States as in England and Wales.Last edited by On Balance; 13-06-2026, 07:23 AM.

Woke up this morning and put on iplayer to catch up on the overnight action.
Watched the USA opening ceremony first but nothing memorable there.
Watching the USA v Paraguay match, a wonderful rendition of stars and stripes before the match with the crowd buying in.
1st half has been great, lots of attacking intent by USA and 3 goals to boot.
Not sure why Paraguay are so poor.
I remember England having to play them back in 86 or was it 90 ?
2nd half still to come.
At this rate I will have overloaded before England play.

Things always get better for me at the knock out stages as the group stages are about strategy- for example Scotland really need to win their first game!Originally posted by stargazer_1962 View PostWoke up this morning and put on iplayer to catch up on the overnight action.
