So we say goodbye to four of the the undeniable heroes in Slocombe, Chicksen, Cameron and Austin. I think it?s good that the club have said about supporting Chicksen and I hope that he can recover and return to playing professionally again.
Slocombe has been a loyal servant of the club over the past six years and must be up there with one of the longest serving players of modern times.
Austin has always worked hard and been a good player for us and has always been able to offer something and do a job. I agree with others in that he is a good squad player at this level and maybe has been a victim of circumstance. Like last seasons defensive rebuild midfield requires the same this summer so it?s understandable. Austin should be able to find a club in league two and maybe one of the promoted clubs from the National League might be a good fit.
It now leaves us with two remaining undeniable hero?s of the promotion squad left JJ and Matt Palmer.
Austin was a good pro, but never quite consistently good enough for L2. Also he’s not the strong, tall, pacy midfielder we need to be targeting henceforth. Same with Whitaker - not strong enough for the rigors of L2. We need a side that can play football but won’t be bullied by the likes of Salford again.
Has anyone noticed how many apprentices have been offered professional deals. 8 or 9, must be the most in years, gives us a squad of 30 already. I know they may go on loan but I cannot remember bringing so many through in one go and can be looked at on a few ways. Are we seeing more Mahavos coming through who are worth a few quid ? It would fit in with the way the owners want to see the club progress i feel. As for the rest of the squad I feel now is the biggest test so far for how we strengthen. Interesting months ahead.
And I also agree. In fact, I think it's a disgrace that he wasn't even on the bench for the last 2 games when they obviously knew they were going to release him. He did absolutely nothing wrong when he played because of Bass's injury yet was treated like this. Showing no respect for a loyal servant. Not good Notts or Maynard
The fact that the only out-of-contract player offered a contract is McGoldrick tells me a lot. Clearly the owners don't think the squad is good enough as it is, AND they believe they can do better out in the market, that's great news IMO. Means that almost certainly we'll start next season with a far stronger squad, meaning our promotion chances should be pretty good.
