Crikey! Does it matter who had the better team nearly 40 years ago? I get that it was something of a Golden era for us as a club and maybe for Barnsley too? I don't know.
What is certain is that Barnsley did a better job of establishing and sustaining themselves in the 2nd tier at that time. We were a flash in the pan.
A few years later their owners also had a bigger vision for their club by building a shiny new 7500 capacity stand at a time when they were struggling to get 7500 fans.

Our recent histories are fairly similar although off the pitch, it has to be said, Barnsley are way ahead of us in terms of infrastructure, transfer policy and youth development.
We're winging it at this level for as long as we can get away with it, which seems to be our only plan. We have reached our full potential by just being in this division and if we stay up, we will have exceeded it. I feel Barnsley have potential to be a comfortable Championship club at least.

We may have won the battle in 1981 but Barnsley have won the war, for lack of a better phrase.
