Not sure about that army, I agree it's not unknown for managers to attempt to weaken the opposition, I'm sure Pulis strung us along all summer once chasing Dawson, with never the slightest intention of letting him go, it back-fired in a way because I think we had to sign Michael Keane right at the end of the window as a result, so it didn't turn out too badly for us, and I'm sure Liverpool re-signed Ian Rush when Aldridge was already scoring for fun for them, simply to stop him signing for anyone else.

But Wood wasn't scoring for us and Eddie bunged us way over the odds at £25 million. That money allowed us to sign the 4th top scorer in the Bundesliga and go for Orsic. If Orsic hadn't changed his mind at the last minute and Wout had scored just a couple of the sitters he missed we would probably have stayed up. Eddie buying Wood gave us the money that could have kept us up, it didn't turn out that way, but Eddie wasn't to know that, if he was being devious, he was lucky to get away with it.
