Possible arrogance from the first leg at Stirling Bridge a year earlier, and a lack of preparation saw the Scots falter in the face of England’s favoured cavalry charge and longbow tactics. The Scots rarely ventured beyond their own half, and the defeat culminated in the resignation of 1297’s victorious manager William Wallace, turned on by the venomous quills of the scrollmen.
