I was thinking more of expectation exile than actual events .
Twenty years ago we hired Dave Bassett with the remit to take us back to the PL , he fell short on the strength of a penalty kick and that was us done and dusted but the recruitment of Bassett told you where we were back then and the expectation around the club , he was a promotion specialist .
He was sacked the following season after a poor start .
Things have disintegrated alongside the changes in modern day football where we don't feel we really belong at this level anymore .
Absolutely not did Hecky want to lose Winnall and Hourihane , he probably didn't want to lose Mawson either .
I have to factor Patrick Cryne's terminal illness in to his decision making , there's no escaping that had a huge bearing on the way he looked at things back then .
It would be unfair to do so in my opinion but none the less I think during his tenure he was happy enough for the club to be at the level they were and possibly didn't have the drive or ambition he possibly should have done at times .
From a position of 7th in the championship on new years day 2017 the club should never have got itself relegated the following season , absolute debacle .
The funny thing is the present ownership bought the club under that circumstance .
What I wanted to see was a " we can do better " regime and build towards at least sustainable championship football .
I've often wondered if they spotted something whilst researching the club with an intention to purchase .
The fans will still turn up and not get too worked up no matter who we sell and when we sell , they'll even turn up when we relegate ourselves , something they spotted under the previous owner .
Three recent victories have silenced the potential uprising , three victories ffs !!!
Perhaps they are right .
