Trump has taken that immense wealth on a series of failed ventures and bankruptcies and has under performed compared to the markets. He has, however, excelled as building a brand on the basis of exaggerating and misrepresenting his wealth. He's elevated himself on the back of lies throughout his entire life. Its his MO.

His being elected and widespread belief in his success is more a reflection on the intelligence of the average American than it is on him.
    Blimey.

I was in Saint Lucia when Trump was elected and a couple of days after the election got chatting about it with a couple from Greenville, Mississippi who were ardent Trump supporters. I won’t pretend that I had a very lengthy conversation with them as I was on holiday and so probably wanted to get back to my sun lounger to have a row with someone on here, but I got the flavour of it.

In essence, they felt that they had been marginalised, discounted and scoffed at by their political leaders for too long and saw Trump as addressing that. Whether they were right or wrong, I wouldn’t like to say, but I detected nothing about them to cause me to question their intelligence. Indeed, I think part of the issue that they had was that they were tired of being treated as lacking in intelligence by a politicians who ‘knew best’.

The Labour Party has spent the last five years dismissing anyone who didn’t buy into their project as morally inferior and lacking in intelligence. Unfortunately, for them that included a significant number of their traditional support who got the chance to respond last December. You should reflect on that, John.

The ‘common cold’ is the name for an upper respiratory tract infection that is caused by numerous different viruses only some of which come from the Coronavirus family. It's a group of illnesses sharing similar symptoms and it's the fact that It is caused by numerous different microorganisms that makes the development of a vaccine impossible. Instead, we are protected to a degree by herd immunity. Covid 19 is caused by a single virus - SARS-CoV-2.

On a per capita basis, we are still behind Belgium, Spain Italy and France. In reality, the potential for variations in the way that deaths are recorded makes comparison difficult at this time. This pandemic will be a rich source of research material in the future and I would imagine that someone will look across Europe using a standardised ‘excess death’ calculation at some point

Addressing climate change means people giving up some of the things that they currently demand, such as cheap and plentiful air travel and large scale red meat consumption. I question whether people will do that; a poster on here who bangs the environmental drum accused me of being a ‘fascist’ for suggesting that he might cut his red meat consumptions as his contribution to the cause.
Where have I said Socialism has the answer to climate change
but thanks for your heads up re the catastrohies I'll probably come across 3 Mile Island no doubt
On greed I think you must be towards the top of the list with your freqent skiing trips ,your travels to the south of France ,your visit to Paris to watch the Six Nations your trip to St Lucia & judging by your life style many other trips abroad don't preach about greed

On a holiday cruise , was it?
(Seem to remember another poster mentioning visiting that area - must have been sheer coincidence )

Seriously though, this government are big believers in league tables for schools... surely they must apply that to themselves? We have been one of the worst in the coronavirus "league tables", and what would happen in a school is that it would be put under "special measures" and the people in charge removed... so time to say goodbye , Boris?

From the rubbish K writes, you would think that Jeremy Corbyn had been prime minister for the last ten years, and is still continuing in power!

Have you not noticed Kerrs habit when he is challenged on a subject that he can't or won't answer he disappears for 12 /24 hours before he responds with his newly researched Google bites Quite a regular habit & as for his Labour side swipes another regular habit for someone who has voted Labour countless times since 1983

On a bit of a sidetrack for anyone interested in such things, might it be time for the Labour party to stop identifying with the term 'socialist'? Although I understand why members use it, I think the term has become so tainted by associations with communist and extreme socialist regimes that have nothing to do with the social democracy that I think of when I hear the word. It's been so tainted by mass hysteria aha distortion against the word over the years that I think the voting public see even a social democrat using the word as holding extremist views. If even relatively bright people like Kerr can't distinguish between the Labour offer in recent manifestos and Venezuela and Russia under a completely different economic model, how can the party expect to convince average public that they are social democrats, and only really opposing deregulated market forces?

And I always cringe when party members address each other as 'comrades'. Noooooo. Maybe we have to get away from these labels? Just a thought. Back under my stone now.
