"A Cambridge University professor has received hundreds of abusive messages, including death threats, after tweets she made sparked an online backlash.

On Tuesday (June 23), Prof Priyamvada Gopal, who teaches English at Churchill College, tweeted: "I'll say it again. White lives don't matter. As white lives." She then added: "Abolish whiteness."

'I say the same thing about my own community'

Speaking to CambridgeshireLive, the professor from India explained her tweets: "I was saying whiteness isn't the reason lives should matter. Lives do matter, but not because they are white. I say the same thing about my own community.

"When I talk about abolishing whiteness, I talk about political practices and ideologies. Systems of oppression, whether white or brown, should be abolished.

"It's about abolishing a race hierarchy where whites are at the top."

What would she be talking about if she was talking about abolishing blackness??

I guess if someone said that you would be screaming that they were a racist or "extreme" right wing.

Your missing the point. Its not a case of deleting history it is a case of making amends for it. We certainly need to remember the atrocities of the past, they were pretty shocking. It is also a reminder to us not to let them happen again...

Of course it does. Germany today is a liberal democracy. The Germans of today are not responsible for the Holocaust any more than you and I are responsible for the actions of 18th century British slavers. Or do you disagree?
