I'm very proud of my working class background. I'm also proud to be from a country that has educated me, looked after my health and allowed me to prosper. Should I have kids I want to teach them the value of hard work, to be grateful of what they have, and to not take anything for granted.
One thing I've learned from my experiences in middle class circles is just how unfair the divide is between the haves and the have-nots. When I look back at the prospects of the kids I went to school with, and I compare it to the poorly performing kids from more privileged backgrounds - its night and day. It has almost nothing to do with how hard a person works and an awful lot more to do with the opportunities and wealth that their parents had.
The fact that I have been able 'climb' the social ladder does not prove the system is fair. It just shows its not impossible.
That is why I can be thankful for what I have and that I have been lucky enough to be able to have it, and determined to make the most of it, but that I will always fight for the working classes to have the opportunities that the middle classes take for granted.
