The biggest difference between the teams (especially in Glasgow) was Wuillie Miller.

Though they only managed to beat Barcelona home and away.
Not beating Bayern and Real like us.

I had you as older than that suggests. His team never won a trophy outside their own street yet the weegia, and so they, thought they were on a par with Ferguson’s afc. Of course he liked us, or our coat tails more precisely. Sure, they beat us at times, 1979 for their FIRST trophy, and losing to them between Munich legs cost us the league in 83. Not to mention Narey’s Harlem Globetrotter audition at Tynecastle in the 85 semi final. They are just above the hun and mini- hun in my estimation. 95 was sweet as feck. I could go on. V57 can and does, more eloquently.

Sorry, should have added, due respect to Mr McLean’s family for their loss.

His achievements at United deserve respect but I recall a myriad of big games against the cheeks when their bottle crashed.

My take was, that was why the weegia loved McLean's United and hated us.

They were never seen as a threat.........we were.
Point taken Inversneckie and I agree. However from memory I honestly don't think they just rolled over.

Bitter as phuck. Pumped you boys in a final and a few semi-finals denying you the chance of winning more trophies in the 80s. Pleasing.
Pity you don't have the same respect as your greatest ever manager does for Wee Jim. Oh and how come Sir Alex who was still your manager at that time decided to pick 5 players from United for the 86 World Cup?
1983 was Aberdeen's greatest year in there history, but United were the best team in Scotland.

Laughable *******s. Aberdeen won the league in 1980, 1984 and 1985. The Scottish Cup in 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1986, the League Cup in 1985 and the European Cup Winners' Cup and European Super Cup in 1983.

United won 1 league title in 1983 and a couple of League Cups in 1979 and 1980.

There really is no comparison on who was better in the 1980s.

    RIP to McLean though.

Well said Duke. Every other Aberdeen site has been more than complementary about Oor Jum. So has possibly the greatest ever Scottish manager - SAF. Some of these guys - jeez, It’s like Jum robbed you of extra trophies, like the League in 83 or the League Cup in 79. Oh, wait a minute, he did! Ha ha.

Get a grip. Jim McLean was an outstanding manager and well you bloody know it. And so was/is Alex Ferguson. I know of not one Arab who would say otherwise. A family have lost their Dad and their Grandad. Holy hell.

Settle petal. Don’t think anyone has argued that he did a great job and haven’t seen any personal insults. This is a football site and the plain facts are our team won far more than your team. If you can’t handle that I suggest you retire gracefully to that uncomfortable bed in your caravan.

That's a bit petty and pointless imo. We were obviously the better and most successful team so I don't see why we care what the media think.

The media, always desperate for a headline, tagged us “The New Firm”. United were nowhere near us in terms of trophies and jointly being tagged with something as a reference to the ugly Glasgow sisters was lazy journalism.

What McLean did (and clearly SAF with AFC) will never be repeated. In a way we did need each other and for two “provincial” teams from Scotland to do what they done at home and in Europe in that period was immense.

Some of our battles with the joots were excellent and being at Dens in the LC final replay to watch us get humped 3-0 in the incessant rain still lives in my memory now.

Anyway, I still hate the tangerine dayglo neeps. Not because they were better than us, but more because they were akin to an annoying fly buzzing around you.
