I dinna have any ill-will towards him and I'm sorry to hear of his passing and the horrible illness that went before it.

There's no doubt he done an amazing job there, and he could get in Fergie's head like few others, but there's no doubt the reason they were media darlings was because they never really threatened the hegemony.

It was the whole "New Firm" p1sh that I couldn't be @rsed with.
Plus the fact they were uniformly lauded for playing "attractive" football, which was patently not the case.

There is certainly no doubting that as a manager Jim McLean had fkn talent and for that alone he deserves much respect.
RIP Jim and condolences to the family you have left behind.

A sad loss to football and especially Dundee United.

With Mr McLean I think you need to look at his achievements alongside his personality.

He achieved great heights dragging the smaller team in Dundee into competion contenders. He made them.

He was also called Grim McLean for a reason. (Our own Sir Alex was also known to have a sharp tongue with eyes everywhere) Tying up young players into low wage contracts for long durations. As I recall he was also known to give bonuses beyond contracts if the team and club had done well. As well as being grim he also got players to play well. Contradictory beasts these winning fella's.

The "tie up" with the Dons was indeed a Glasgow concoction. They liked Dundee United because they could try and boost their chances of taking points off us where the cheeks couldn't. Of course the establishment soon sorted that by distorting the financial distribution in Scottish football to the detriment of not only us but particularly Dundee United.

But for all his genius (and it was there to achieve what he did with that club) and the punches etc. I will always remember him as the boss of the passbacks eleven. Never have I seen a goalie have as many touches as Hamish McAlpine.

    Mr McLean will be remembered.

I just don't get the whole "weegia" stuff on here. Folk get their knickers in a twist about it.

Perhaps living in "weegia" you don't notice:

    * BBC closing their Aberdeen studios leaving practically no content from the north/ northeast of the country
    * Grampian tv being closed and subsumed into STV again leaving little input from this part of the country
    * A sausage factory in the central belt being closed requiring the presence of the First Minister whilst a similar closure of Youngs seafood factory requiring no visit
    * the shipyard at Greenock being brought into public ownership to save jobs then going tits up whilst jobs are being lost in the northeast but we are told that new jobs to replace them should be distributed around the country
    * Prestwick airport (only 40 miles from a major international airport) being brought into public ownership at great annual expense whilst lifeline airports struggle
    * Rangers and Celtic
    * public spending in the central belt being far far higher than in other parts of the country
    * hidden subsidy (beyond the public spending above) to the central belt e.g. Glasgow subway, national ********* etc.

I hope this begins to help. I could go on.

That wasn't my point but I'm glad you spent some time on a response that wasn't really required

Keep up the good fight (raised fist emoji)
