I know but you can do the math yourself.

If you haven't got a yellow at number 20, you can't go up.

If you have a yellow at number 20, your round that you have just played or your next lowest aff o the other 12 replaces it.

So you then do the math.

Played 9 under over Sat/Sun and went up.
It depends what the CSS was for the competitions you took part in.

It seems that the Scottish Golf Union have made the handicap system too complicated.
I also do not agree with the rule that a player can now ‘accidentally’ ground their club in a bunker with no penalty as it is wide open to abuse. I also think that it is wrong to be able to putt on the green with the pin in. Even the professional golfer are allowed to do this.
Thank goodness I chucked the golf in February 2011 as it is now too complicated.
Here is another daft rule. About three years ago I contacted the match secretary of Islay Golf Club to obtain a handicap certificate for my last playing handicap which was from memory 10.6 which I would hand over to Downfield Golf Club should I wish to rejoin when we eventually move back to live permanently in Dundee.
The match secretary told me that the rules had changed and I would now have to submit three cards playing on Downfield Golf Course along with a discussion with the Downfield Golf Club match secretary to get my new handicap.
In my opinion this new system is wide open to abuse. There is nothing to prevent me putting in three cards which would give me a 28 handicap and then ‘clean up’ in the club and open competitions until eventually my handicap would get down to a true level of about 12.

    It's a world handicap system.

I doubt Scottish golf had a lot of input.

    Basically yanks system.

Is that why you mention ‘doing the math’?

Thank you for your information about the new handicap system which has scrapped the CSS.
I think that it is crazy having a world handicap system as it is a well known fact that ‘one size does not fit all’.
There is another problem with the golf handicap system which was introduced in 1983 and does not appear to be fixed.
Golf clubs are full of very low handicap golfers who are mostly ‘one course wonders’.
Prior to 1983 a golfer with a handicap of 4 or less had to submit 40% of their scores playing in competitions on other golf courses but under the rules of the 1983 golf handicap system which I understand was introduced from Australia this obligation stopped.
There are hundreds of golfers throughout Scotland with a handicap of scratch (0) +1,+2,+3,+4 and even +5 because they only play competitions on their own member golf course.
When we moved to Islay in 2005 and became a full member of Islay Golf Club my handicap was 6. However by the time I chucked the golf in February 2011 my handicap had increased to 10.6 (11) as Machrie Golf Course was a far more difficult golf course to play than Downfield Golf Course.
Machrie Golf Course like other typical links golf courses had no shelter from the wind and it had 13 blind holes. It was rumoured that the course had been designed by Stevie Wonder.
Machrie Golf Course has since been redesigned by David J Russell and it is a pale shadow of the former golf course with all the character ripped out of it.
