I've watched the replay several times since, and Richie Benaud saying "he's got it awaaay" is a phrase I'll always remember.

I was playing cricket that day, we got finished and rushed to the pub listening to the last over on the radio and when we got into the car park the others all sat in their cars listening to the radio. We took a chance and went into the pub praying they'd got it on the tv there, and they had, getting in there just in time to see the last ball! We took a chance and it paid off, timing is everything.

This is the other last over drama I remember from my youth - Mike “Noddy” Bore almost winning us the championship in 1984 but being caught on the boundary going for the shot that would have brought us the title.

Never seen the news report with this before - looking at it now, how was Richard Hadlee given out instead of a six being given?

I also love Noddy’s response afterwards that he should have had an extra lunch. Heroes all.

I can't make head or tail of your table 60YearsAPie, wins, draws, losses. I know points were carried over from the qualifying round of the Championship, but not sure how you get half points for batting and bowling. Plus, how do you get half points for a win loss and draw? Sorry if I am being thick lol. I do love your avatar though Emma Radacanu is going to be a star

My two great granddaughters are big Emma Raducanu fans and I said if she made it to the semi-final I'd make her my avatar.

As for the table, it's from the ECB website. It says that each team carries forward half the points from the 2 games played against the team in their original group. So I guess if you won one and drew one, that would be half a win and half a draw to include in the table. Likewise, if you scored seven batting points in the 2 games, that would be three and a half batting points brought forward.

It was unfortunate that Notts' only two defeats were against Warwickshire, but as Warwickshire lost their last game, Notts sit proudly at the top of the table with two games to go. Daft system but as long as Notts are top it doesn't matter!

I've been telling friends and family for about 2 years now that Emma will be an absolute star of world tennis thanks to some regular first hand inside information from someone in her team.

Although few if any expected her to be so impressive at Wimbledon this year and even moreso at the US open. Less than a year ago I was following her progress in a juniors tournament in Turkey which she won or reached the final. Fast forward and she's rightly the darling of English tennis (men's or women's) and she's going deep in the majors.

Plus she's a sports marketers/advertisers dream, the sponsors are going to be all over her if not already . I hope she can cope with her rapid rise to world fame in the tennis world.

Next year's Wimbledon should be even more fun than normal and I'll be there to witness. I highly recommend.

Thank you for that link. Emotional watching.

You did bloody well to find anything as posh as 1 star near Yarmouth! Terrible time for the meter to run out but it does make for a great story. What a day that was.

That's as good an explanation as you can get. I know it's an unprecedented situation, but I doubt the ECB will ever use such a ridiculously convoluted system again. The upshot is that by winning the first two games (even though the table says we have played three) we have wiped out our handicap, and to use an infamous phrase 'our destiny is in our own hands'. Our last two games are against the two teams directly below us, so it's now ours to lose.

    As Elite's meter story shows.

Not like you to have been playing cricket Observer, who'd have thought it?!

The T20 was ultimately very disappointing for the Outlaws, and the 50 over competition was a bit of a joke, although we did blood some very good, young prospects. The red ball game has been fantastic for Notts cricket and I cannot remember a season when so much young talent has been unearthed. Most unlike Notts, but great to see. Thanks for the explanation about the points.
