To whether we finish 3rd,5th,6th or had finished 6th,5th,3rd in those orders it doesn't really bother me. To say either (on the pitch) is progress or regression as a headline statement is a bit sensationalist because its marginal. They are all playoff finishes, the only difference is the difficulty of the task is reduced the higher you finish.

If the league positions had been 3rd, 5th and 11th or vice versa well that's very different.

Obviously we are only talking league position here and not the club as a whole which I view more important in the long term.
Personally I don’t feel that progression can be clearly defined. Has the standard of football improved? For many of us that would be a yes. However, points gained and league position is IMO subjective. As shown during this thread. Ultimately if we finish in the playoffs and don’t go up I would see that as the same as the last 2 seasons. If we do go up, then clearly that would be a success. We can do that finishing 7th, our worst position in history.

Theoretically. it is possible to finish a season in 2nd place and lose on pens in the play off final - then the following season end up 23 points better off and yet finish rock bottom of the league and be relegated.

I can't see how - the lowest points total I think you can get and still finish 2nd in a 24 team league is 45. Can't see how you can then finish bottom with 68 points

Can see it with 67 though.

I was thinking in terms of a typical 46 game season (with 24 teams).....

Everybody draws every game, everybody finishes on 46 points, separated by goals scored.
The following season, every game ends in a home win, every team finishes on 69 points, separated by goal difference.

Ah fair enough, I was only thinking about placement based on points differences.

In regards to position in the pyramid then yes. With regards to player recruitment, player development and the overall infrastructure within the club, the progress since the new owners took over has improved demonstrably.

Ultimately yes, but without progression in the more minor categories you ain't gonna get the ultimate progression.

Let’s hope we are saying the same next season.
