I think it's actually the other way around. Anyone who has a real interest in a player would be willing to pay something now but obviously not as much as they would have paid if the player had say 2y left on their contract. However, there is no real incentive for the player to agree a deal now when they more than likely would get a better one as a free agent. However, if the deal is good enough and secures their future for say 3.5 years then I could see it happening as insurance against either a loss in form or the potential of a bad injury in the next 6 months.
Matt Taylor actually said and I quote " The number of signings we need, it's probably going to be a collection of loans, possibly a couple of free signings and possibly a couple of fees involved."
