It is really sad that I don’t even have a copy of the recording - it was recorded by a house-full of county fans in a friends front room but the recording quality was actually not bad and certainly good enough for the radio broadcast. I did’nt play the banjo but I played the guitar and strangly, my mate played the bass guitar and his nickname was Banjo. All very odd. I remember the first few lines ie:
“Super Notts Super Notts” - (chant)
‘they started way back in 1862 and with their colours were nicknamed the Magpies
With a will to succeed soon were top of the league and showing everybody the way
The skill and class is there for all to see and for those who are still non-believer's
Just come down to the lane and your sure to remain a Magpie supporter believe us
Oh Notts County we’ll always be behind you we’ll be right behind you all the way
OH Oh Notts County, we’ll be there to see you Saturday
Long rule Notts County,
the best football we’ve seen for many years
When the second goal the’ve got, we’re all chanting ‘Super Notts’
Filling meadow lane with lots of cheers
La da da da da da da - la da da da da da da - la da da da da da da da da
‘Super Notts Super Notts (chant)
There was another verse but I can’t remember it.
The best Notts song is ‘Tie Them in Notts’ .. yes it’s cheesy but it should be played before games now I think.
Lots of teams have old, cheesy songs and they are much better then the current chart music.
Who were the boys of the County
They're known as the Magpies by all
Let's go down the Lane and we'll give them a cheer
While they play the game of foot-ball
The Magpies, the Magpies
We'll give them a cheer once again, again
The Magpies, the Magpies
We'll give them a cheer once again
They are the boys of the County
They play down at old Meadow Lane
We'll give them a cheer from the fans they can hear
while they glide to-the-top once again
The Magpies, the Magpies
We'll give them a cheer once again, again
The Magpies, the Magpies
We'll give them a cheer once again
Yes they are boys of the County
Yes they are the lads that can win
We'll go down the Lane and we'll give them a cheer
and let everybody join in
The Magpies, the Magpies
We'll give them a cheer once again, again
The Magpies, the Magpies
We'll give them a cheer once again
Weirdly enough this is just about bearable. I listened to it all the way through and didn't feel the urge to head-butt the cat once.
"Mansfield Magic" would probably give you that urge, recorded 1987 for when they first went to Wembley for the FL Trophy final.
There's a mock radio commentary section in it and tellingly they didn't ask their then BBC radio reporter Stan Searle to do it, which would have been hilarious and made the whole thing worthwhile.
