Exactly. It's about gaining an edge through data to overachieve in relation to the amount of money we're spending. Squeezing as much value as possible out of every decision. Contrast that with what Wrexham and Stockport are doing, which is using massive budgets as a battering ram to force their way up the leagues.

You can add Chesterfield to that list. They’re signing seasoned pros like Dunkley (a three-year contract for a 32-year-old defender) and Madden (two-year deal for a 34-year-old), so seem to be prioritising getting out of L2 at the first opportunity. We’ll see how that works for them.

And that is the weakness. Sometimes dithering means that you drop from 'No1 Target' to number 4 or 5 because numbers 2 and 3 have gone in the meantime. The model has to have some flexibility in there.

Fascinating point. The assumption is that using data driven analysis to approach players somehow slows down the process of signing someone.

I believe that part of the delay in Notts making inroads in player recruitment is down to whether Macca and, or, JJ leave. Both would command a decent transfer fee and would provide a larger war chest when recruiting. Players deemed too expensive now could come in to Notts range.

Why do we think it’s down to the model? If top targets have gone should the club then hand out 1,2,3 year deals to players they don’t really want? No the defence wasn’t good enough but did anyone expect it to go from the 2nd best in the NL to the worse in league 2 letting in nearly 90, I certainly didn’t. I didn’t think it would be perfect but certainly not turn out that bad and a lot was to do with the system too tbf, hindsight’s a wonderful thing.

This post is far too reasonable and sensible for NCM. Yellow card next time

Good post. It's conveniently forgotten that we were top quite deep into the season. But margins have always been thin in L2.
Lose a key cog to a playing system like Palmer, then Bostock, and the gamble that was our defence last year suddenly backfires big time.

Generally, I'm all for keeping what made us special model-wise. There's at least one more promotion to be had in following this formula, and to be great to watch in the meantime. I'm against anything that makes us just another run-of-the-mill L2 club

I'm not criticising the system Swale merely pointing out last year indecision or lack of intent, call it what you will left us with no strength in depth and we need to be more proactive before all the best players are gone and we are left picking through the bones or signing higher league apprentices , that rarely work out.

Fair enough, but Goalkeeper was a mistake and RCB an oversight that had us hamstrung. The former suggests it's important to get things right, even if it takes longer. The RCB may have been about budget and the idea around the club that the promotion players had earned their shot at the next level.
I've think we have a bigger concern than recruitment tbh.

SM? May well turn out to be a problem but right now nothing is bigger than recruitment.
