Let’s also not forget Hackworth’s predecessor, the master of being in the wrong place at the right time, Mr Kevin Rapley.
Blast from the past!
Kevin Rapley however, lives long in my good books. I was ball boy one night at ML and Rapley bagged quite late on and ran over to the Sirrel Stand where I was positioned, hugged me during the celebratory melee and it was on the front of the Football Post. Great stuff.
Tony Agana and Brian Deane were a formidable pairing at Sheffield Utd. A shame that Mr.Pavis cashed in on Paul Rideout and spent 50 % extra on TA.
Selling Paul Rideout and the injury to Don O 'Riordan, which together with dreadful refereeing decisions at home v Liverpool & Man Utd , meant Notts were relegated before the first PL season.
I've never seen somebody come so close to a heart attack in total rage and despair directly in the seat in front of me than when Rapley gave the ball away which led directly to an injury time equaliser (v Brentford I think).
Having said that, he did score - albeit with his hand - a very crucial goal away to Luton that was the turning point in the 98/99 season that saved us from immediately going straight back down to tier 4, which most likely would have ruined Allardyce's career otherwise. Incredibly, when you think about it, Southgate may never have become England manager if that triumvirate of attacking signings (Rapley, Stallard and Beadle) not had the impact they did.
I see all your other names and I raise you .....the great Tom Williams
On a free, but allegedly on big wages. Signed with dodgy knee(s) don’t recall him winning one header the whole season!. In the modern era I’m not sure I’ve seen a worse Notts centre forward… Benjamin Burgess.
