Darrell Clarke says Callum Styles didn't play because his head wasn't in the right place due to interest from other clubs

I’ve defended Styles quite a bit but I’d say that’s poor from him and you’d definitely expect him to leave now. Hopefully, for all parties, it will be a permanent transfer.

For the game, I thought they’d started very well and we were chasing shadows. Then we grew into the game a bit but you can’t miss chances like the ones Watters, Cosgrove and possibly Phillips did. I’ll have to watch the highlights back as maybe they were tougher than I thought but they all looked like poor finishing.

Signed a good goalkeeper on loan but it’s up front where we are desperate for some quality. Absolutely need 2 strikers/attacking players that know how to put the ball in the net.

Connell my man of the match.

Not good tonight boys really caught cold early on but you should have pulled it back after Luca’s good fortune because Mansfield were weak at the back. Watters didn’t look too bad but Cosgrove was his usual self of just a big lump, ok to bring on last ten minutes when you’re chasing a game but otherwise not got much. Luca was sensational, best player on the field by a mile but he can’t do it all himself which he appeared to be trying to do tonight. As you’ve all said you really do need at least one and preferably a couple of good forwards and quickly. First games are never easy but you can quickly fall behind if you don’t switch it up soon because it’s the Imps next and that definitely won’t be easy.

That's absolutely disgraceful, and yet we keep hearing that he's one of our best players, we must keep him, better together etc!. 😧
Can anybody seriously keep defending him after hearing this ?.
Apparently Clarke himself decided he didn't want him in the squad with that attitude, and can you blame him.
That 600k offer is looking interesting at the moment, as we're not going to get anywhere near what we're looking for.

I have been one who has defended him because good players are an asset and Styles is an asset but after last night it is obvious we have reached the end of the road and he has to go , regarding his attitude Clarke has repeated that Styles attitude through out the pre season has been first class but it is obvious that moves are a foot for him to move on and I think Clarke will have made the call to leave him out after discussions with the lad and on reflection it was the right call , imagine if he had played left back and got pulled like Gent did to change formation , he would have got slaughtered by the fans and would have been blamed for the bad start where as nobody has pointed the finger at Gent , anyway we move on .

We have Connell who would make it into the Third Division team of the season and was outstanding last night, and possibly two or three others, but could I politely suggest that the squad overall is not as good as some would have us believe.

After gerrin an arseoyling first 20 mins we probably deserved a point over 90 mins.

Perhaps not a good example of man management regarding Killip to announce his replacement during the game.

Very true about Killip who I thought had a very competent game last night, he could not be blamed for either goal , his handling was excellent and he pulled a great save off late in the game to keep us in it , he is a classic example of a player who the fans never wanted, simply because he came from Hartlepool and to be fair when called upon he has not let us down , I feel sorry for the lad .

I think the Styles head not in the right place is probably only the half of it and I'm no Styles fan , the club themselves wouldn't have wanted to risk an injury if a few much needed pounds were coming our way in my opinion .

It appears to me that the club are operating on meagre resources and unfortunately it is what it is .

It doesn't mean the club can't be successful at this level but it does require the club to be extraordinarily good at recruitment .

As good as it was when Hourihane and Roberts were acquired the first time .

It remains to be seen whether that high standard can be replicated .
