The recent riots showed (and I'm misusing a phrase from somewhere else here) civilization is a mile wide and an inch thick. I bet the authorities were glad when the footy season started and it's coming towards the end of the year. Riots never happen in winter really do they?

It's my conspiracy theory and I'm going to stick to it! LOL.

    Plato's noble lie anyone?

Edit: Someone has noticed the addiction theory, but hasn't made the elite controlling of the masses connection, ha, ha:

It sounds like Huxley's Brave New World to me. However, when you drill into facts, how many people out there are legally or illegally medicating? I was shocked when I found out how many people were taking anti-depressants.

Not quite, my first job in 1976 earned me £16 after tax, I soon moved to Boots for what was a very healthy increase in pay to £21

Just admit it BFP, you’ve been had over by all your socialist mates, there worse than the Torries and that’s saying something, but as I’ve told you before they are ALL as bad as each other, don’t trust any of them regardless of party.
Calm down mate, you’ll self combust. Why you’re so determined to persuade yourself and others that ‘they’re all the same’ only you know. I suspect it’s to give yourself the moral permission to vote and support loathsome individuals like Farage, his performing monkey Anderson or whichever circus act wins the Tory leadership.

You keep telling yourself if it makes you feel better, you’re not going to win me over though.

Leave the monarchy out of this.

I'm thinking of starting a GoFundMe page for Charlie and Camilla.

How can they be expected to heat a palace without the fuel allowance?

I'm not in favour of the Welfare State. The term implies that it is a way to have your life controlled - like The Fascist State or The Hermit State.

I'm in favour of a safety net for all those that need to call on it, but it's reviewed every three months. There has to be certain, minimal criteria that the recipient has to meet each time - depending on why they are receiving the payment. I'm 100% against child benefit of ANY form. Why should the taxpayer subsidise others to breed?

The term "Welfare State" was coined for Britain in the early 1940s as a counterpoint to the Nazi Germany "Warfare State".

Because they are the tax payers of the future?
And referring back to my means test post a few days ago, if it wasn't for family allowance (as it was then) me and my sister would have starved (we were close to it anyway, single parent, poor pay for women, rent, electricity and gas meter and all the rest of it). Guess some people were born lucky eh?

"Keir Starmer tells regulators to chill as Microsoft exec takes wheel of advisory council
    What could possibly go wrong?"

A legal professional in the UK voiced concerns about potential conflict of interest in hiring a Microsoft exec to work in a public sector role.

"Leaving aside the crass stupidity of appointing the UK head of a US HQ'ed global supplier under ongoing active investigation by the CMA for alleged manipulation of their market share, the gov[ernment] have arguably both sent a clear message of their faith and dependency on Microsoft AND dealt the CMA's investigation a crashing blow," he told The Reg.
Buy your Microsoft Shares now! Right wing governments allowing foreign nationals to formulate policies - indeed what possibly can go wrong.
